I got googly and found quite a few sites mentioning louis using cannabis:

  • For Harry Potter fans, muggles was a nickname for marijuana in the 1920-1930 jazz era. Louis Armstrong wrote and recorded an instrumental called Muggles. As a lifelong user of that drug, particularly before concerts, Louis felt that it sharpened his performances and increased his skills. http://www.umkc.edu/imc/armstron.htm
  • Armstrong was fingered for arrest for smoking marijuana by a rival bandleader in Los Angeles in March of 1931, at which time his career was hijacked by a mysterious man named Johnny Collins who claimed to be Louis's manager and got him out of jail. http://www.onlinepot.org/reefermadness/videoaudio.htm
