Jean Valjean gives himself away to save another convict. That convict who was on trial has the "looks" of Red Skelton. Could it be him, in a role which is not documented ? He is buried under so much beard and such that he is hard to recognize, but looking at his eyes, and the shape of his face when he smiles, seems to be a dead giveaway for me that he is in fact Red Skelton.
Anyone else have information to identify the actor ?
Actually, I think Frederic March played the mistaken identity convict (his name in the book is Champmathieu) as well as playing Jean Valjean, of course. Looks like they did the same logical double-casting (after all, his fellow convicts of many years mistakenly identified him as Valjean, so the resemblance must be striking) in the 1934 version. Red Skelton hadn't made it to Broadway yet in 1935, let alone Hollywood. Cbarlow3 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:06, 25 March 2009 (UTC).
