Irish names[edit]

I'm curious about your decision to move O'Siochfhradha to Ó Siochfhradha. I don't consider myself an expert, but I think its more common to use an O' instead of Ó in an Irish name.

Seabhcan 22:41, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

It's only more common because it's more common to use the Anglified form of the name. O'Sugrue would be fine, but it just looks wrong to use an apostrophe with the Irish form of the name - it's misleading (i.e. there's no abbreviation happening) and a misspelling since the O needs it's accent. I'm sure some people do use apostrophes with Irish forms of names, but it shouldn't be encouraged.
Of course, if it was his choice to spell it that way, it would be right to honour that, but I very much doubt it was.
--Moilleadóir 05:38, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The [o:] is meant to be the same IPA character i.e. o with a length symbol afterwards. The Australian value of the vowel in 'born', 'sawn' is higher than [O:], closer to [o:]. The vowel in 'gone' has the same *quality* as 'Ron', but the same *quantity* as 'born'. Helps? --Kesuari 12:34, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Greetings! Since you recently contributed to Arabic transliteration, I thought you might be interested in the following project: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Arabic). Vicífhoclóir[edit]

Moilleadóir, a bhuachaill, conas 'tá? :) Is mise Alison, táim im' riarthóir anseo, ach d'aistrigh mé go dtí an Vicífhoclóir Gaeilge mar bhí sé beagnach bás. Agus anois, tá se saghas beo arís. Tá a lán obair le déanahm fós! :) Tá cuntas agat taobh ansin cheana! An maith leat cabhair a thabhairt dúinn? Fuzzy logic[edit]

I don't think you should have removed the link to Fuzzy Logic (album) at the top of Fuzzy logic. You said "There is a disambiguation page", but people who type in "fuzzy logic" (or "Fuzzy logic") will not see the disambiguation page (which is at "Fuzzy Logic"; I couldn't even find the disambiguation page at first), so they'd have no way to find the album from there. So I went ahead and put the link back in. Just a heads-up. - furrykef (Talk at me) 10:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

your complaint about delinking trivial chronological items[edit]

I refer to your posting at MOSNUM talk. Such linkings are, by any reasonable interpretation of MOS(NUM), a breach of the requirement that they add significantly to the readers' understanding of the topic. There are a whole bunch of reasons that they're undesirable, among the most important being that they dilute the likelihood that readers will attend to the high-value links. I'd like to know exactly why you feel so attached to the idea of not cleaning up what many people regard as a little cultural fixation among Wikis over the past few years. TONY (talk) 01:01, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

Thank you very much indeed for the translation. Wonderful! I really must make an effort at learning some Irish or Gaelic, enough that I could translate stuff with a dictionary and grammar to hand, but my excuse until now has been that it isn't easy to learn either language here in Brussels. But I'll be moving back to Scotland soon, so no more excuses then. Thanks again and best wishes, Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yoruba language[edit]

Thanks for your note on my talk page. First, your edits have been helpful from a layout point of view. But the section has major issues; the focus on Arabic amounts to undue weight. See http://www.lingref.com/cpp/acal/35/paper1304.pdf for a bare overview of the sort if influence English has had on Yoruba. The loans in the article are of a very limited religious nature dealing with the Muslim minority, not with all speakers. The days of the week may seem secular, but are related to religious worship as well. Besides the proselytizing POV, the source is basically a fringe "scholar" published in self-promoting and or unverifiable works. So far as I can see this section is no different from, say, a Christian evangelical quoting essentially white supremacist fringe literature to show how Christian missionary work has expanded the vocabulary of Native American languages. At this point I am going to delete the section again as undue weight and problematic in regards to POV and especially the source. I am not averse to having a vocabulary or loanword section. But as it is we have a promotion of the views of Sheikh Dr. Abu-Abdullah Adelabu section. μηδείς (talk) 20:08, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Changes to Islamic prophet infoboxes[edit]

Hi, I think it's a bad idea to make potentially controversial changes to articles en masse, without testing the water for disputes and establishing consensus. I've reverted your change in one of them and replied to a discussion about honorifics on another page. I trust that you will implement whatever consensus we reach in the other articles yourself. Thanks. Eperoton (talk) 23:18, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For he's a jolly good fellow[edit]

I refer to your deletion of the Australian variation of "For he's a jolly good fellow" as "For she's a jolly good lassie. Notwithstanding that you have not heard of it, it is a traditional variation, particularly in Victoria that I am personally familiar with. I was able to source numerous examples of it from newspaper articles (Shepparton, Echuca area, Geelong, Fairfax media) and other sources from the 1940s to the present day. I selected three representative sources. I made the contribution anonymously only due to not being able to remember my credentials. I believe I have therefore addressed your fair criticism of the quality of the reference and have once more included this example of Australian cultural history in the article. Fair Use in Australia campaign update[edit]

I'm writing you this followup message, as you took the time to vote in support of a Wikipedia banner campaign for the introduction of Fair Use in Australia.
After much planning and coordination with the WMF, Australian Digital Alliance, and Electronic Frontiers Australia, as of Monday the banner-campaign is active on English Wikipedia to a portion of logged-out readers in Australia (technical details). The banners direct people to this page on Meta: FairCopyrightOz. That page, alongside lots of information, further directs people towards the campaign website faircopyright.org.au where Australians are invited to write to their local MP to express support of Fair Use. If you are interested in supporting this campaign, please, send a letter yourself using the template letter provided at that link.
Furthermore, and with the support of the ADA & EFA, we have received fantastic media coverage - with article "Fair Use: Wikipedia targets Australians in bid to change the law" appearing on page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald and page 10 of the Melbourne Age on Monday's edition. It was for a time the 3rd most read article the Fairfax website, and Fair Use was "trending" on Twitter in Australia. We are running the account @FairCopyrightOz on twitter, and we are tracking other press-mentions on the talkpage on Meta.
Today, day 2, we published a detailed post about the campaign on the Wikimedia Blog, ran an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A session on the Australia page in Reddit, and [by happy coincidence of timing] the article History of fair use proposals in Australia appeared on the en.wp mainpage as a Did You Know. [The creation of that "history of..." article was a specific request arising from in the community consultation in which you voted].
And, most importantly, in a little more than a day nearly 800 letters to MPs have been sent encouraging them to support the Productivity Commission's recommendation to adopt Fair Use in Australia. I urge you - please add your own message.
Sincerely, Wittylama 17:01, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
