What does it mean to say that he had a "humanistic" education? All modern education is humanistic, unless you go to a madrassah or a yeshiva. What does this mean in an Austrian context? Adam 05:34, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

In the German speaking world, there are three traditional branches in secondary education:
  • humanistic: specialises in ancient languages (Latin, Greek)
  • modern languages: specialises in those
  • mathematical-scientific
I for one went to a modern languages one. Hehe. Nowadays there are some more forms of specialization, like schools specializing in sports. --Nikai 09:51, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

OK, thanks for explaining that. Since this is an English-language encyclopaedia, that sense of the term is not clear to readers and needs to be explained. In Britain it would be called a Classical education, in the US I suspect it would be unknown. So you have to write an article called Humanistic education (Germany) or German education system or something similar, or else say "humanistic education (one specialising in ancient languages)." Adam 10:20, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Yes, but I think an appropriate place to link instead would be Gymnasium (school). This will only take to translate the paragraph from de:Gymnasium which explains these branches. --Nikai 10:45, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Link to benita.at[edit]

I don't think it necessary that an article has an external link to a political opponent, in this case Benita Ferrero-Waldner, especially if the linked page doesn't provide any crucial informations about Heinz Fischer; if anybody is interested in Benita Ferrero-Waldner, she is mentioned in the article and a link to her homepage can be found in her article. --FermatSim 16:12, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Image[edit]

There is now a selection for him at wikimedia commons. I tried to add the best one but it had the same name as the old fair use one so tht came up instead. If anyone knows how to get he good commons image up please do it cos this one is relatively poor--Ruddyell 23:56, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fischer and social democracy[edit]

Fischer's membership in the SPOe is currently resting. If you see the German Wikipedia, you'll find no reference to his current status as a social democrat. There'd be much more sources in German, but i found those in English: [1], [2], [3]. The last source is from the Wiener Zeitung which is said to be the oldest daily newspaper in the world an which is actually owned by the Austrian state. So the thing is clear for me. --Glorfindel Goldscheitel (talk) 12:34, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Second term not necessarily last[edit]

The second term is usually, but not necessarily the last term for a President of Austria. He is not allowed to be elected a third consecutive (!) time, but he could run again later on. (Given his age this is unlikely.) Or someone could trigger a recall vote and if that fails, he will automatically get another full term in office. (Not very likely either.)

So maybe it should read "most likely last" term. Ds77 (talk) 18:37, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agnosticism[edit]

Another editor continues to insist on the infobox containing the incorrect words 'Religion: Agnosticism', in preference to either 'Religion: none' or 'Religion: none (agnostic)', either of which would be acceptable. Agnosticism is not a religion; it is the absence of religion. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:46, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish Descent?[edit]

Mentioned in the list of tags but nowhere else in the article is subject's Jewish descent. If true this should be elaborated upon since he was born prior to WW2 and spent his childhood in Austria. Were his parents both Jews? What happened to them at the hands of the nazis? To him? --Jrm2007 (talk) 22:23, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He doesn't seem to have any Jewish ancestry, although he is married to a Jew.[4] Unless a source can be found that shed more light into this, he shouldn't be in this category. Shellwood (talk) 16:27, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the tag "Austrian people of Jewish descent". In [5] he confirms that he has previously been a member of a Christian church and that he later left that church. --K1812 (talk) 12:20, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I now found a source claiming that his grandfather on his father's side was Jewish:
https://www.profil.at/oesterreich/zeitgeschichte-herbert-lackner-jahre-heinz-fischer-6330755
The source is an article in German written by Austrian journalist Herbert Lackner, translated to English it says: "That Fischer's Jewish grandfather on his father's side had been expelled from the University of Vienna because he had shouted 'Ugh Lueger' in the theatre, that thus politics go back even further in the family - that he (Fischer) told me just recently".
I therefore add the category Austrian people of Jewish descent again. --K1812 (talk) 13:08, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
