Charlotte was almost alone, in the whole valley. She paused as she hung out her laundry to scan the narrow hot scrublands leading down to the Okanagan River. Just turned 19, just married, and now the only white woman at this lonely frontier post, she was Charlotte Moresby, daughter of a widow in New Westminster, and niece of Admiral Fairfax Moresby who commanded the Pacific Squadron for the British Empire: a lonely girl for all that. Her husband rode away alot on business. Her husband, Judge John Haynes, directed the Customs Office at Sooyoos by the American Border, alongside old trading and gold rush trails. Visitors were infrequent, and rough. It was very hot.
