Origin of the Name[edit]

I'm not that satisfied with this Klang#Origin_of_the_Name section. I'm not too sure whether "kilang" is really the origin of "Klang". Haven't found any reference for it. Anyway, I've included reference to "Calang" and "Calan" as given on PNM's origin of Klang place name. -- sabre23t 08:19, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Responding to my own post. Okay found a good reference (though in Malay) Sejarah Klang by Nur Azian binti Abdul Wahab. Quote, Asal usul nama Kelang adalah daripada bahasa Mon-Khymer iaitu "Klong". "Klong" boleh diertikan sebagai gudang dan tempat simpanan barang-barang, terusan atau jalan air. -- sabre23t 08:59, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Also wanted to let you know that the name of the town is now Klang when referred to in Malay and in English. Once upon a time in the 1980s the original name Kelang as referenced in Malay was officially changed to Klang by his royal highness of Selangor. Info3000 (talk) 07:53, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The name Klang was used long before Kelang. It was changed to Kelang when the spelling reform were implemented in the 1970s, then reverted back to Klang in the 80s. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.154.9.201 (talk) 12:09, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Klang North and Klang South[edit]

I've made a few grammatical changes to the section, as I was unsatisfied with the previous choice of words used.

Changed "banks" to "more residential areas". Though Klang South may have some banks, I doubt it is sufficient enough to classify it as an important characteristic which differentiates it from Klang North, as Klang North has its fair share of banks.

Also, I am unsure of the relevance of "Little India" in the section. Little India is an important part of Kelang in the older section of the city. The construction of the highway to Port Klang did serious damage to the older section of the town. There are not only many Indian shops and restaurants, but, there is also a older Mosque, which caters largely to Indian Muslims.

The name of Keling or Ji Ling in Chinese was indicated on Zheng He's or Mohamad Cheng Ho's sailing chart at abt 1450. This seems to indicate the Indian origin of Keling. On its bank also indicated a hill called China Hill. You can refer to Mill's article in a journal. Pl contact me if you are interested.

Kelang was an important center of trade more than 1500 years prior to Mohammad Chen Ho's sailing chart. An important source of tin, the metal that added to copper makes basic bronze, Klang, as it is now called due to the whim of a Bugis Sultan, appears to have been a trade destination more than two thousand years ago. There was once a prominent hill, from which one could survey the sea,and some evidence seemed to indicate that the Kingdom of Klang predates any other center in Selangor. Sadly evidence that would support the existence of states such as Klang on the Malay Peninsula have suffered from not only improper archeology, but the hill where preliminary work by British scholars was done, no longer exists. By the early eighties, almost the entire hill, once called Bukit Kuda, or Horse Hill, had been carted away for use in filling wetlands. The hills had always been fortified in that area. Bukit Jugra, a subsidiary seat of power, guarded the approach from the sea, while the old Malay royals, overthrown by Bugis mercenarys, from whom the present Sultan and his family are descended, were murdered, or forced to flee. As the Bugis seizure of power occurred before the British colonized the region, and the Bugis usurpers have made great efforts to legitimize their reign, it is difficult to find artifacts that date to the ancient state of Kelang. Even the actual gong, an elaborate piece, dating back some two thousand years has vanished from the museum, an accurate copy which I had occasion to examine, taking its place. this makes it impossible to subject the gong to tests that would more accurately date it. The most plausible case as I see it, is the link with a series of great empires encompassing parts of Sumatra, much of the Malay Peninsula, especially the coastal regions, though evidence exists that points to a far more widely spread out population than previously thought to exist. These series of states or empires, included much of what is now Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and the southern regions of Vietnam. Earthquakes and volcanoes appear to have had a pivotal role in the birth and even more, the death of these states. Indophiles have always tried to credit India as having a major role in the creation of some of these states. My studies would indicate that such is a rather chauvinistic and overtly racialist approach, assuming as it does, that the people of that region were incapable of advanced civilization. The situation is further complicated by the Islamic Question. Archeologists have been frustrated time and time again by religious zealots, who would deny any important civilization in the region before the arrival of Islam. Important sites have been discovered up and down the peninsula. I,myself know of several worthy of serious investigation. In the state of Kedah, the local religious council wish to list what was found at what ought to be a very important site, and then destroy anything that could be connected with idolatry. There is a major site, in the jungle in Johor, and sites now beneath the city state of Singapore. Politics and religion have, hand in hand, served to deaden legitimate research into the ancient history of the area. Put in proper perspective, this is the region where rice was domesticated, tin and gold were found here in abundance, spices and gums and exotic woods were traded from here. How is it possible that one can even think to argue that the culture was primitive. The disappearance of states and empires can be correlated to violent earthquakes and even more pointedly, to volcanic eruptions. Krakatoa was violent in the late nineteenth century, causing global climate change. We know that several much more violent eruptions occurred, one in the early 13th century, which coincides with the co;;apse and disappearance of a state that historians call Sriva Jaya. Kelang was part of that empire. Then there was another, close to six hundred years before that. At least two major sites appear to have totally collapsed around that time. i am certain there are more, and know where to dig. But, there is politics, both of race, and of religion, there is also much anecdotal evidence of the destruction of further sites and artifacts, especially near the sites of tin mines. Most of what could be examined in the original site of Klang, has been literally hauled away in dump trucks. There is hope however, as new technology my find remnants, and perhaps we caqn build from there. Those of you from Klang, know your town has stood for at least two thousand years. JCH Just one question.... I live in klang, but i have no idea about opening of a Carrefour store....Can you identify the source? Yeoyeong

I believe it is being constructed in Bukit Tinggi, though I am not entirely certain. Lightgazer 08:36, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
