Recent news[edit]

How about a recent news section including the Augustine Volcanic eruptions, the possible mine project in the mountains across the inlet, etc? Wrad 00:13, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

images[edit]

I have added some new images to the article, including changing the top image in the infobox. While it was a very nice panorama of the Spit, the actual town was about a half mile outside the frame. I have replaced it with an image looking back at Homer from the slough on a winter day. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:12, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

charitable/nonprofit orgs[edit]

Seeing as Homer does have an unusually high number of nonprofit organizations it may be a good idea to have a section or subsection detailing this phenomenon and mentioning some of the more well known ones. We already have a few with their own articles such as the Homer Public Library and the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra. the idea here would be to list the more notable organizations and try to find sources for them to help construct this new content. Miller Landing again[edit]

FWIW, searching for "Miller Landing, AK" on Google Maps takes one to Miller's Landing in Lowell Point. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 02:25, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't find that particularly surprising as locals refer to this area as "Kachemak Drive near the boat yard and the gear shed." Even the exact site where the landing was isn't called that anymore, its the Northern Enterprises boat haul-out these days. I have also found that the Google maps folks made a lot of errors in this area and when contacted about specific problems they do not fix them or even reply at all. Citations[edit]

Long known as The "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World." Homer is also nicknamed "the end of the road," and more recently, "the cosmic hamlet by the sea."

Where are the citations for these? HardeeHar (talk) 09:52, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@HardeeHar: A late reply, but I can answer at least one of those: "Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea" is a quote from a guy who was known as Brother Asaiah, and was documented by the New York Times, among others.[1] A quick googling of "Halibut Capital of the World" shows the local Chamber of Commerce, and many other sources using it [2] and I believe this is actually a real "official" thing as I seem to recall we lost the title at one point. "The End of the Road" is possibly from Tom Bodett, who wrote extensively about his experiences in Homer, and this is the title of one of his books of collected tales of Homer.[3] Beeblebrox (talk) 22:26, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Updating to include info about the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival[edit]

I am working on improving a Wikipedia article as part of a class through my university and I plan to update this page soon to include information on the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival that is held in Homer annually. Weedsandherbsandflowers (talk) 23:14, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This might be a notable enough event to have its own article. Alternately, perhaps we could have an entire section on regular/yearly events in Homer, as many other places do. Possibilities include:
  • The Winter Carnival
  • Winter King Salmon Derby
  • Homer Halibut Derby (this is over but it was a regular, season-long event for like 30 years)
  • Kachemak Bay writer's conference
Most of these events had at least some involvement from the Homer Chamber of Commerce who may have more information. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:23, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
