Aturpatkan, old region, northwest of Iran, approximately corresponding to Azarbaijan. The region was a part of the Median country during the Achaemenid era. After the attack of Alexander of Macedon, it was named after Aturpat [Atropates] (the ruler of the state). It is this name that has been transformed to Azarbaigan, Azarbaijan (Arabized), and (tamperingly) Azarabadgan.
