Oldest oil well in the world?[edit]

This article makes the astounding claim that Digboi has the oldest running oil well in the world, without offering any substantiation. It says, "Crude oil was discovered here in late 19th century, in a span of ten years when the discovery of Oil took place in first Oil drilling in the world. Digboi oilfield has the oldest running oil well in the world [citation needed]. The Wikipedia article, Petroleum, says "The world's first commercial oil well was drilled in Poland in 1853." The History of petroleum article says "The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in 347 AD or earlier." The Hindu Business Line article cited here says "In 1866, i.e. seven years after oil was struck in the US, Indias [sic] first oil well was drilled at Nahorpung, about 30 miles south-east of Digboi, at a depth of 102 ft. In 1889, the first commercial well was struck in Digboi at a depth of 662 ft." In any case, Digboi would be a late-comer. Digboi surely did not see the earliest oil drilling in the world; and whether any the earliest wells are producing today is a question of fact (not shown). The plaque on the discovery well, Digboi Well No. 1, [http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=852000] says it was spudded in by percussion method in September, 1889. Oil was struck on October 19, 1889, and commercial production started in November, 1890. Flow ceased in 1927, and the well was abandoned in 1932.
Although some of the other wells may be in production, even today, although at low rates, their actual age is not stated. Instead, the Digboi refinery relies on production from surrounding regions. Is Digboi the oldest producing field in India? Fconaway (talk) 01:30, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
