Incorrect original research[edit]

This article contains the claim "A difficulty with (Viall's micronuke theory) is that the smallest tactical nuclear weapon has a yield of approximately 10 kilotons; an explosion of this magnitude would have levelled Bali." There are many tactical nuclear weapons with yields of significantly less than 10 kilotons. See for example the W30 atomic demolition munition. Not to say that Viall's theory is credibly - it's clearly not - but the article's statement is false. PubliusFL 18:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This was my mistake, due to an incorrect reading of tactical nuclear weapons. It should be corrected. The difficulty with avoiding some measure of original research here is that Viall's claims are so odd, and so obscure, that they are not made by any credible source and, therefore, not rebutted by any credible source. However, if this claim is to be retained, it would seem odd to simply present it without any context. Would be good to have your thoughts on a better approach. Have further edited section on Bali bomb/micronuke theory, on May 29 around 0630 GMT, to correct misleading claims inserted into section on Robert Finnegan (suspect these were made by Finnegan himself.) Jakarta Post is not Indonesia's largest newspaper (Kompas is), nor was Finnegan the paper's "lead investigator" - he was a copy editor only. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.117.143.129 (talk) 07:09, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Future of this article[edit]

Vialls.com seems to have gone dead. Most of its content is available on the wayback machine. However I wonder whether it's worthwhile to do this - Vialls' notability was always marginal and (such as it was) largely based on his website. If the article is to be maintained, we might consider a rewrite. The section on "hacking" is odd, and of limited relevance compared to Vialls' claims of worldwide nuclear attacks by the Mossad. Would also seem relevant to note his antisemitism, which is redolent of Der Stürmer, e.g.:

Like Roman Emperors of old, the criminal elite intended to sit by the beach eating bunches of ripe grapes, and then as dusk fell, humbly consult their Talmuds to see exactly how many small Lebanese boys and girls they were allowed to defile and sodomize during the long warm night ahead. As you might expect, the Talmud imposes no bag limit at all.
All non-Jews [Goyim] were and still are available for the unrestricted sexual pleasure of the Jewish conquerors, a religious 'law' that, according to sworn witness statements, indicted war criminal Ariel Sharon later enforced more than two dozen times in the Lebanese Shatila and Sabra refugee camps, when he eagerly unzipped his flies and brutally sodomized helpless screaming children held down by his fellow criminals.

Reliable sources[edit]

Hi, I have tagged many of the sources with "verify credibility" tags because to me, they don't seem to meet the requirements in WP:RS or WP:V, in that they are blogs or personal websites. Based on the lack of reliable references, I was considering nominating the article for deletion, but then I found two newspaper articles discussing Vialls and his views:

  • Casimir, Jon (12 September 1998). "Losing the plot". Spectrum. Sydney Morning Herald. p. 1. {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help)
  • Forbes, Mark (30 August 1998). "Most of us think the Port Arthur massacre was the work of one crazed individual. But within the twilight zone of the lunar right, one man's madness is actually a global conspiracy". Agenda. Sunday Age. p. 13. {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help)

So, he is notable, but the references provided in the article don't support that. Somno (talk) 05:10, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

-- Vialls is also cited in "CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL ANTI-SEMITISM: A REPORT PROVIDED TO UNITED STATES CONGRESS" as reported by US Fed News, March 13 2008, as follows:

"The false claim that the October 2002 Bali bombing was caused by an Israeli "mini-nuke" was invented by Joe Vialls, an anti-Semitic Australian conspiracy theorist and self-styled "private investigator" who died in 2005. Vialls had a penchant for elaborate, bizarre conspiracy theories and unsubstantiated claims. The "mini-nuke" claim did not spread widely, although it was reported in the Indonesian press."

Unfortunately I don't have a link to this as I accessed it from a database, not online. Vialls' theories have also been cited in, among others, the Los Angeles Times, Australia's Hobart Mercury newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, and Sunday Age -- all reputable media organizations. -- Anonymous, June 8, 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.117.143.129 (talk) 06:38, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The importance of Vialls claim is that he made it on 21 October 2002, just nine days after the bombing, and was later seized upon by others as being credible. This eventually led to Abu Bakar Bashir in 2006 claiming the bomb was a CIA "micro-nuclear" weapon, that had been substituted for the 1 tonne bomb built by Dr Azahari and Dulmatin. Vialls was therefore a key figure in one of the craziest conspiracy theories of the decade.

It might also be worthwhile mentioning the late 1998 letter from complaints officer Stephanie Boyd of the Office of Health Review in Perth referring to mental illness in his health records. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.253.4.7 (talk) 11:12, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Muhammad al-Durrah[edit]

This article contains the following line; "Muhammad al-Durrah, a Palestinian boy who Palestinians inaccurately claimed was killed by Israeli military forces". That's a a good deal less than NPOV - the case of Muhammad al-Durrah has never been satisfactorily explained. Most people agree that the IDF probably were not responsible, but that's a long way from "Palestinians inaccurately claimed was killed by Israeli military forces". For a start "Palestinians" don't make this claim. SOME Palestinians make this claim ... and saying that "Palestinians inaccurately claimed ..." sounds like a racist smear to me. Secondly, it's entirely possible that the IDF DID inadvertently kill Muhammad al-Durrah. So the wording needs to be changed. 124.169.130.250 (talk) 05:04, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
