Deleted section[edit]

I deleted this entire section because of the lack of attention paid to format, grammar, etc. However, there's some good information there, so if anyone else wants to rework some of this back into the article, here's the deleted text in its entirety. Note that it was originally simply pasted at the bottom of the existing wiki page, which obviously isn't the preferred method of addition to an article, to say the least.

Long Branch is a "beach" town on the Jersey shore. Life in Long Branch has centered for more than a century around life near the beach. Long Branch was dating back to the late 1700's a beach resort town. It was by the 1800's a "hollywood" of the east. Where some of the greatest theatrical and other performers of the day gathered and performed. By the first half of the 20th century seven presidents had used Long Branch as a vacation place. These included Ulysses S. Grant, Chester A. Arthur, Rutherford Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Woodrow Wilson and James Garfield. A park near the beach is named (Seven Presidents Park) in honor of their stay. Originally a resort town with a few hotels and large estates and many farms in the early 20th century Long Branch grew in population. Italian, Irish and Jewish immigrants all sought to make it their home. By the 1950's Long Branch like many other towns had developed new residential spots and housing to make room for the growing population. Many of the former farms of Long Branch were transformed into residential "suburbs". Many of the estates and few old historic resorts (with the addition of many new ones) still remain. With the uprising of Hollywood in California Long Branch lost much of its activity as a "theatre" spot. Long Branch still continues however to be a very popular resort area. Especially for people from NYC looking to escape the summer's heat at Long Branch's beautiful beaches. With its history of settlement by Italian and other immigrants the Italian population and flavor and influence in Long Branch is strong. Columbus day is still celebrated with parades and a fair. It also has a strong Jewish influence among many other ethnic groups that share the area. Hispanics of many origins comprise many sections of Long Branch as well as African Americans. More recent additions to the town include Portuguese speaking immigrants such as those from Portugal and Brazil. Long Branch now consists of a few downtown and urban areas, many suburban and middle class neighborhoods and very expensive beach housing, and old estate houses. The income of Long Branch residents is varied. From the very poor to the middle class to the very wealthy. The mean income for Long Branch residents could most accurately be classified as "middle class". Long Branch also has a few defined sections. The north end is as it would seem.... the north end of Long Branch near where Seven President's Park is located. West End is also a section of Long Branch that strangely enough occupies the south EASTERN end of the town. It is one of the better "downtown" areas in Long Branch housing many great restaurants, and shops. Increasingly as years go on it is also the spot (besides the beach and boardwalk) for town events. West End in particular has over the years housed a vibrant gay (homosexual) community. It was also a gathering place for 'beatniks' in the 50's and 60's and hippies who used to gather at various places including the still thriving Inkwell cafe. The southern end of Long Branch is called Elberon. It is all together probably the more and most affluent section of Long Branch. This section of Long Branch houses many new and old large estates. Until recently it also housed a large patch of woods and a farm nicknamed the "ranch". There is one farm left standing in Long Branch located in Elberon and it is a horse farm. Much of Elberon was formerly a farm owned by E.L. Bron. When he sold it to the town it was name Elberon. Long Branch also incidentally houses one of the most renowned hospitals in the area Monmouth Medical. And the schools in Long Branch are renowned for their quality and progressiveness. It is one of the first towns in the area to start a free early learning program for preschool aged students. Eminent Domain[edit]

I saw that it was briefly mentioned in the article, but does anyone plan on expanding the segment about eminent domain in Long Branch? I'm not too familiar with the whole fiasco behind Pier Village so I couldn't write too much about it, but it seems like it could deserve mention.

Hollywood?[edit]

The references and analogies to Hollywood are ahistorical and way off base. Hollywood became the capital of the film industry in the early 20th Century long after the heyday of Long Branch. Moreover, to the extent that Long Branch was an important venue of stage theater, its competition would have come from Broadway and Vaudeville. Thus the decline of Long Branch, NJ as a destination venue for stage theater had little to do with Hollywood. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.196.208.133 (talk) 15:04, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think you might be right about this. The origin of those statements was an anon IP on 16 July 2005, who added a whole lot of unsourced stuff, some of which has been trimmed, but the Hollywood stuff apparently remained. The only other fleeting references to "Hollywood of the east" being Long Branch seem to be in two books which were both published after that date, which makes it likely that the authors were pulling that phrase from this article. I'll take a closer look but I think removing that stuff is the right call. Rockypedia (talk) 17:53, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
