I would like to abolish all of these categories. At present there are lots of "English people" categories and lots of "British people" categories, and they way they are being used is hopelessly inconsistent. I should think that lots of Wikipedians don't realise that they both exist, and casual users of the site are even less likely to realise that this dual cateogorisation is being applied.

I think it would be fine to just put English people into "British people" categories. If the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish want to create parallel categories, that would be fine.

I've just discovered that a future version of the software may allow readers to look through sub-categories if they wish, so I suppose these won't do any harm in that case. I've made several of them subcategories of the relevant "British xxxxxx" category. Philip 02:58, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
