About editing[edit]

Dear BIR! When you type four tildes, as Gene s suggests, they are automatically converted into your name and date. This is very convenient to keep track of the discussion. Also, please do not answer in the middle of some other's text. As you have already noticed, even with two persons it soon becomes impossible to understand who said what and why. This often happens even in maillists and newsgroups with theirconventions of indenting, prefeixing and coloring. A good way is to quote the phrase you comment, like I will do below:

Gene s said: "Why are you refusing to sign your posts by a standard signature". This is probably because they don't know what a standard signature is and in the heat of discussion you didn't explain that ~~~~ is a very easy way of producing this signature (not to say that I may guess that someone was looking at gene's suggesion in the edit mode, copied the whole (nowiki)...(/nowiki) thing and got nothing good). Mikkalai 15:57, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Please stop converting valid URLs to invalid URLs[edit]

When can I expect your apology? RickK 00:15, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

Funny, I don't see the words "I'm sorry." RickK 06:44, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I accept your apology. RickK 07:01, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

Second Chechen War[edit]

BIR,

I understand that you and some other users have differences of opinion over the content and potential biases (intentional or otherwise) of the article on the Second Chechen War. Have you considered making use of the Request for Comment page? I might also suggest that you propose wording changes on the article's talk page rather than editing the article directly—this might help to defuse some of the tension and cut down on the frequent reverts to the article. In general, I would also advise against accusing people who disagree with you of being part of a pro-Kremlin conspiracy; it really doesn't help move the debate forward.

Feel free to respond on my Talk page. --TenOfAllTrades 14:50, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hello again. Regarding your message, I would just like to reiterate that I'm not overly concerned about the particular biases, affiliations, or nationality of any editor. I welcome factual and notable contributions to articles from anyone who wishes to add to Wikipedia, and I'm sure that attitude is shared by every good contributor here.

Given the contentious nature of the Second Chechen War article, I would hope and expect all contributors to pay particularly close attention to the importance of NPOV, and be prepared to support their statements with references to independent sources. As it says at the bottom of every edit window, sloppy contributions will be edited mercilessly. I hope that helps to put your mind at ease. --TenOfAllTrades | Talk 19:24, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

That wasn't more NPOV, I found. You changed (anti-Moscow) Chechen into Pro-Moscow Chechens, thereby distorting the sentence's crucial distinction (!). El_C 06:08, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BIR,

You recently uploaded an image, Image:Voting for Chechen constitution.jpg, which indicates an external web site source: [1]. Could you clarify a few points on the image description page?

The image is marked as being under a GFDL license, but the website linked doesn't seem to indicate the photograph's origin or copyright holder. For an image to have the GFDL copyright tag, we need to give credit to the copyright owner (the photographer or the corporate entity that bought the image) and also be able to show that the owner explicitly gave permission to distribute the image under the GFDL.

If you don't have that information, it will be necessary to delete the image from Wikipedia. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 13:31, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This picture has been around for a long time, and I think you need to contact the webmaster for Copy rights issues. Given, of course, that you're fair and impartial in this crisis and just not seeking ptetexts etc. And furthermore, the the caricatures even photos have belonged to the politics everywhere, also in encyclopedic contexts in order to make things vivid--BIR 12:04, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I would appreciate it if you wouldn't accuse me of operating under some pretext; you'll note that I haven't tried to remove any of the factual content related to the photograph, and I've come here to discuss with you the image rather than deleting it outright.
While it is a nice picture, I don't think it's absolutely essential to the article. If you can find information on the photographer and show that the image is under a free license, it can stay; right now I'm concerned about protecting Wikipedia from legal liability if we don't have the appropriate permission to use and redistribute a copyrighted image. Image:Voting for Chechen constitution.jpg has been listed as a possibly unfree image[edit]

An image that you uploaded, Image:Voting for Chechen constitution.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. I've listed the image at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images per our normal procedure, pending resolution of the question regarding the image's source. If the licensing concerns aren't cleared up in thirty days, the image may be deleted. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 17:43, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Halibutt's RfA[edit]

Thanks. WikiThanks.
Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:IlyasAkhamov.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image Tagging for Image:Zakayev.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Zakayev.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Unspecified source for Image:RedgraveZakayev.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:RedgraveZakayev.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 19:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Mashadov.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Mashadov.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Polly (Parrot) 00:34, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Bairakgerb.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Bairakgerb.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 04:52, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Karaylar[edit]

The article Karaylar has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
