How should go forth to add information about Venus the goddess, which is linked to from other articles about mythology?

Added a stub to the page - please edit as appropriate.

huh?

Um, click here - Venus, then click on "edit this page right now!" at the bottom of the page, then help to write a good encyclopedia article.

Any newbies - see also How to edit a page and FAQ

Okay, it was a quite generic question from my side, as I've seen several topics where there are more than one relevant answer. I was browsing about mythology, clicked on 'Venus' and got a page about the planet Venus.

Now, should one make a link such as Venus the goddess, and add that to a 'See also: ' page at the bottom of the current Venus page, or? .. I was thinking about using a single ---- , but as there are already two such in use of the layout of the current article, that wouldn't distinguish it as a new topic ..

Apparently people haven't been using a format like Venus the goddess

Correct .. so, what does one do if one want to add an article about her? :)

Either add it to the Venus page (in the section on "Venus the goddess") or start a separate page with a separate title if that's more appropriate.

It was our intention to use titles like "Venus (Planet)", but the software doesn't support it. We've been in the process of changing software for a while now, so this will get fixed as soon as we do. --LDC

True or false??[edit]

True or false: this article belongs at Venus (disambiguation) with Venus re-directing to Venus (planet). 66.245.125.9 22:03, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

False. People are somewhat more likely to be looking for the planet than the Greek goddess, but not to such a predominant degree that the article at Venus should be exclusively about the planet. -Sean Curtin 00:52, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Venus and Venus (disambiguation)[edit]

Why do we have a "Venus" article redirecting to "Venus (disambiguation)"? Shouldn't we just do the disambiguation in "Venus"? --Jcmo 10:33, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Page move: Disambig or Planet[edit]

This move was originally proposed to place the disambig page as the primary, but it has been refactored to include the possibility of placing Venus (planet) at the primary, after considerable popular support for that option. Dragons flight 01:01, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Something ought to be at Venus other than a redirect (presently to this disambig page). The question is whether this disambiguation page should be placed there or whether the article on Venus (planet) belongs on the main page, similar to Earth, Mars and Jupiter. Please indicate whether you would prefer the planet or the disambiguation page to be the primary in this case.

  • Planet. I'm quite sure that the meaning most Americans think of when they hear the word "Venus" is the planet next to earth. How close is this to being true?? Georgia guy 16:05, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • I'm not familiar with the American culture, but if the common meaning of the word "Venus" is the planet, how come the feminine leg shaver got the name "Gillette Venus"? --Puzzlet Chung 02:28, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
      • The common meaning of "Mach" is for multiples of the speed of sound, the men's razor got the name "Gillette Mach 3" (and mine hasn't broken the sound barrier once, let alone achieve three times its speed). =) — Knowledge Seeker 06:52, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Disambiguation It makes no sense for Venus to redirect to Venus (disambiguation). Just make Venus the disambiguation page itself to streamline things. Wood Thrush 02:48, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
  • Comment, since I was the one that made the inital change, I didn't realize it would cause this much havoc. I don't mind if it was moved back to the way it originally was. How about redirecting Venus to Venus (planet), then readers can use the note at the top of that page to get to the Venus (disambiguation) page. If not, then indeed there is no need for Venus (disambig). Phoenix2 03:30, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Comment I'd think the dab page should be named Venus, similar to Mercury, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. But having just fixed a zillion dab links to Mercury, I notice most of them are for the element, some the planet, and only a handful the Roman god (I fixed the Venus links too and they're mostly to the planet, although many got redirected to transit of Venus). Jupiter and Mars go directly to the planet, so it's okay if Venus does too. But an article title should never be a redirect to a parenthesized page. —Wahoofive (talk) 04:41, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Planet. I think that Venus (planet) should be at Venus, and Venus (disambiguation) should stay where it is. The use of Venus to refer to the planet is clearly the dominant usage, and I think that the other usages are minor enough that they may be placed on a separate disambiguation page. But I agree with Wahoofive that Venus should not be a redirect, whatever is decided. — Knowledge Seeker 06:52, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Planet. I agree with Knowledge Seeker (above). This article should be treated the same way as Jupiter. The only planets with a commonly-used alternate meaning are Mercury and Earth. --Doradus 13:31, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
  • Planet. Prefer Venus (planet) -> Venus as per above. Dragons flight 18:15, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
  • Disambiguation. Looking over a few search/dictionary entries I see many uses of Venus, including swimwear and names of towns. It seems to me there is no clear (like 90%+) usage for one topic, it therefore should be a dab page. Awolf002 01:32, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Planet, it's the first thing I think of. Secondly would be Venus (mythology) since Venus (planet) is named after Venus (mythology). Thirdly the dab page. Definitely not a redirect. Cburnett 02:26, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
  • Planet, and the dab header should include For the goddess, see [[Venus (mythology) before Otheruses. One click for astronomers, two clicks for Hellenists, three for everybody else. Septentrionalis 02:52, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Disambiguation. It's only natural that amongst the predominantly science-biased Wikipedia editors the planet seems the most natural topic, but that could hardly be said to be the case for the general population. I'd certainly think of the goddess first, and it's most definitely not a candidate for primary-topic disambiguation. Proteus (Talk) 10:48, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Disambiguation. Venus is an ambiguous title - if a reader ends up here, that's bad. Worse is if we presume to know what an editor meant to link to by picking the planet. Josh Parris 2 July 2005 14:01 (UTC)
  • Planet violet/riga (t) 10:40, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Voting closed - with a majority of 7 to 4 to move the planet to Venus I'm going to go ahead and do that. violet/riga (t) 10:40, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Planet as a verb[edit]

What does "planet" mean as a verb?? (It appears that people are doing so in the above discussion.) Georgia guy 01:02, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

more than "disambiguation" as a verb, which the rest of them are using. :-> Septentrionalis 02:47, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Bananarama cover of Shocking Blue song[edit]

I've restored the mention of Bananarama in the entry for the Shocking Blue song "Venus" which was removed in a tidyup.

I'm not a fan of fluff and bloat, and I'd oppose inclusion of most covers in a dab page.

However, the Bananarama version is very famous- a major hit in several countries. Since many people are unaware that it *was* a cover, it's unlikely that they're going to know the "Shocking Blue" song entry is the one they're looking for otherwise.
