I'm going to have to agree with "SA." Inka Wayna Kapak, father of Atawallpa, is thought to have sought to establish a second capital at Quito (in addition to Qosqo) before he died of disease. This should be changed. D.E. Cottrell 23:01, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think the following important fact should be added: The Incas worshiped the Sun as a diety and felt Quíto was of great spiritual importance as "the place with no shadows". Economy of Quito[edit]

In my opinion, this article needs to explain how the economy of Quito works by giving more details, e.g.:

  1. which foreign or national companies operate in Quito
  2. poverty in Quito
  3. corruption and illegal economic activities
  4. the economical differences between the north and the south of the city
  5. the main economic activities and industries/factories in Quito
  6. trade/commerce and transportation of goods
  7. telecommunications/media/radio and TV stations/newspapers/press/postal service

The information in this section is entirely unclear to me. It may be that there is a problem with the grammar or maybe such sentences as "by 2009 the GDP of Quito was approximately $ 10.65 billion by way of production (19% contribution), 4112 millions of dollars in award (8% of award) and 14.762 billion dollars for total GDP (27% from 8% contract, 19% produced)" might give some further reference so a typical reader might have some understanding of what is being talked about. Looks like someone did a cut and paste from some jargon filled bureaucratic document. Request Move[edit]

The request is based on the principal that the common denominator, per the new category UTC-5 demonstrates that cities generally have the state or province name. Take for example Ottawa which should redirect to Ottawa, Ontario and not vis-versa. This will help when categorizing cities. --CyclePat 00:29, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's serious discrepancy here![edit]

The entry says that in 1809 the population of Quito was 10,000 -- but it also says that in 1797 an earthquake killed 40,000. This is REALLY unlikely. Can someone check these numbers? scotteaux 21:06, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The discrepancy has to do with La Paz not being the official capital of Bolivia -- while most government institutions moved to La Paz in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the legal capital and judicial branch are still in Sucre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.14.205.100 (talk) 15:09, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

List of attractions and reference to getquitoecuador[edit]

I put back in the list of attractions and the reference to getquitoecuador.com for the following reasons. (1) I think the list of attractions is a useful part of the article; feel free to disagree. (2) Encyclopedic content should be cited, and the getquitoecuador.com site was clearly the source for this content. Perhaps there is a better source; feel free to find it. (3) Even though the site is a commercial one, and even though they liberally sprinkled links throughout (which have now been removed), it's still the source for this info.

So I would propose either: (1) leave it as is, with the info in the article and the citation of getquitoecuador; (2) leave the list in, but find a better reference; or (3) remove it entirely (as was recently done)---but only if the information is not worthwhile or the getquitoecuador.com site is felt, by consensus, to be highly inappropriate. To me (2) is the optimal choice, but requires further research, and (1) is fine in the interim. But I'm sure others may disagree.

As to the comment "disguised as a reference", the intention was not to disguise anything. Please assume good faith. -- Spireguy 16:53, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parishes[edit]

Currently on the page, we have two types of parishes listed in the politics section: urban and electoral. Can someone please explain the difference between the two. The map of the urban parishes is found on the municipality's website, but those parishes do not show up on the list of parishes on INEC's website (nor do the electoral one). And if the electoral one are just for elections (I suppose based on the name), why does my cedula (an Ecuadorian national ID) list Chaupicruz, an electoral parish, as the subdivision below Quito and not La Concepcion, the urban parish in the same location.

Once a difinitive difference as been clearly established, changing Template:Parishes of Quito may be necessary, or creating a new one.

More Information[edit]

Hello everyone. I've been helping with the Quito page in the Wikipedia(ES) but now that I think it's got enough information by now I will help with this one. I'll add and improve the political division (yeh, that thing about parishes is unclear), the culture section, the parks section, a tourism section and many other things. Many tourists before comming to Quito they may come to Wikipedia to see for some information but this page needs to overcome. This page is very disorganised... Ok, I have now started "pimping" the page. I've included a "tourism" section and inside of it I've included the historic centre, the teleferiqo, el Panecillo and other sections. I've also expanded the "Geography section". I'll expand the "Parks" section and also the "Transportation" section, including more information about buses, the airport and a future section about the street network. While the new information is welcomed, it seems that the new Points of Interest section is just way too big! Which led me to a new a suggestion to make the section smaller, especially in regards to the Centre and Parks subsection: create new articles for each individual park/church, and just add a list in this page. In a sense, it would end up looking more like the Outside the City section. Some of the Spanish names of the churches, included that of the saints they are named after will have to be translated into English: San Francisco is St. Francis, Santo Domingo is St. Dominic, La Compania de Jesus is The Society of Jesus, La Merced seems fine but can be translated to Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy.

And be advised, any new info needs to be double checked, referenced if possible, and be proofread.

More pictures[edit]

This article needs more images, both of old Quito and the rest of the city; including affluent and working-class neighborhoods. The few photographs now barely give some idea of the city. I'm a terrible photographer, so I don't own many images, but I'm sure some Wikipedians can help us on this. Geography - nearby volcanoes[edit]

Can someone verify this statement in the article: The latest eruption was recorded on August 23, 2006, when a few puffs of smoke and a large amount of ash were deposited on the city.[citation needed] Although not devastating, the eruption caused significant disruption of activities, including closing of the international airport.

I looked on the Smithsonian/USGS global volcanism site (http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1502-02=&volpage=weekly) and cannot find record of Pichincha erupting in August 2006.

I was in Ecuador (Quito mostly) during that time (July through Sept 2006), and Tungurahua was erupting frequently in July and August, so I suspect that whoever wrote this originally was thinking of one of Tungurahua's eruptions that closed the airport in Guayaquil in late August and spread ash all over to its west. I am pretty sure Pichincha did not erupt at all in summer 2006, because I would remember!! But surely someone more authoritative can verify this. Stephy1771 (talk) 20:25, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The city's problems[edit]

Can change with time[edit]

You're right that it should read as a brochure, but problems in crime, as you mention, just started in recent years and they can be fix in the coming ones. Crime has increase, but this usually happens to any city that's growing, I know it has increase more than it should have, but nonetheless, this facts can change and should be left out from the facts. If we need updates on that, we could read the news. I come here for facts, so as a workaround, maybe a table by year with the increase in assaults, robbery and/or murders can be added, without any bias opinion to it, just the table. --Felipe (talk) 19:06, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Highest capital city in the world??[edit]

As far as I know, the highest capital city in the world is La Paz, Bolivia [3,675 m (12,057 ft) above sea level]. This article on Quito maintains that Quito is "the highest capital city in the world housing the administrative, legislative and judicial functions." This would seem to say that the legislative and judicial functions of the Bolivian state are not housed in La Paz (is this true?). On the other hand, La Paz (whether it houses all three branches of govt. or not) is undeniably the capital of Bolivia and undeniably higher up in altitude than Quito, making the claim at the beginning of this article either erroneous, or nitpicking, at best. I think it should be changed to "second highest capital city in the world" and the part about "housing the administrative, legislative and judicial functions" should either be lost or should go in a separate sentence, if indeed it is important to include (or it could be stated in a sentence as in comparison with La Paz, if the latter does not actually house all branches of govt., by saying that "unlike La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, Quito houses all three branches of govt." As per the previous comment: "capital city" is an official status and has nothing to do with what branches of government a city houses. La Paz is undeniably NOT the capital of Bolivia. Crime in Quito[edit]

Quito Observatory, oldest observatory in Latin America?[edit]

I found an article in Developing Basic Space Science World-Wide: A Decade of UN/ESA Workshops which states that Colombia's "...National Astronomical Observatory (OAN) built in 1803 is the oldest observatory in the continent." New Mayor (2019)[edit]

Hi. As of May 14, 2019, the mayor of Quito is Jorge Yunda, not Mauricio Rodas.[1] This information is easily found by googling Jorge Yunda, or even by going to the Mayor of Quito page. Yunda does not have an English Wikipedia article yet, but he does have one in the Spanish Wikipedia from which one could be created. The largest city of Ecuador in 2019[edit]

There is great controversy regarding the most populated cities in the country, however, "Quito has been ratified as the most populous city in Ecuador," as there are no articles in the law or the like that dictate that the population of a city is purely urban, it is municipal as a whole. Quito has 2,735,987 inhabitants (remember that Quito is not only the area of ​​urban parishes, Quito comprises a whole, that is, Quito D.M.), while Guayaquil (understand Guayaquil as a WHOLE) has 2,698,077 inhabitants. A clear difference of just over 38,000 inhabitants, a gap that increases over the years. There are people who defend by sword that Guayaquil is still the most populous city in the country, CLEAR REGIONALISM an desinformation (Wikipedia isn't the only reference). Of course, its urban parishes concentrate more population than those of Quito. 2.6 million vs. 2 million. But 'the term city UNDERSTANDS EVERYTHING', not just urban cities, since, as I mentioned earlier, there is no law that indicates that a city is made up of urban parishes. For example, Calderón is a rural parish in Quito, but it belongs to the city of Quito.

If so, otherwise please let me know in my personal discussion. Also, I delete the "controversy" note, because I leave below evidence and sufficient references that notice that Quito is the largest city of Ecuador.

Population Discrepancies[edit]

The city isn't recorded as being the largest in terms of population in Ecuador, Guayaquil is. even the metro population is below Guayaquil's actual population. Hello. I have been claimed that Quito is the largest city of Ecuador nowadays, because the statistics of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), that it's the Government local census source, in its publication "Proyecciones Poblacionales". Retrieved April 18, 2020., Quito (as a canton, like a municipality and city, not urban area solely) figures with 2,78 million inhabitants in 2020, more than Guayaquil (which you defend as the largest city of the country), that figures with 2,32 million. I understand what you think, but Wikipedia has wrong data, because it only considers the urban area. In this point, Guayaquil has more population than Quito, 2,6 million to be exact. This is higher than the capital's one (2,0 million). For this reason, Quito has more inhabitants than Guayaquil, because we consider the rural areas (note that Guayaquil only has 100K people in its rural areas, lower than Quito, that has nearly 700K people in its rural areas). Please, try to understand that Quito is the largest city of Ecuador, Guayaquil has a lower growth rate of population than Quito, and we can't talk about the population of both cities without taking into consideration their rural areas. User Serols has rolled back my edit correcting the climate classification of Quito. Cfb is oceanic climate, not Subtropical highland climate.

Second highest capital[edit]

I assume the statement in the lede that Quito is the second highest capital in the world assumes that La Paz is the highest one. However, La Paz is the government seat but not the capital of Bolivia making Quito actually the highest capital. Ymblanter (talk) 00:17, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ymblanter: Dear Ymblinter. La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia while Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia. Therefore officially, no, but then again many government sites treat La Paz as a capital. Maybe second or first would be a good solution. Have a great day!
