Since, prior to 1603 and maybe even as late as 1707, it was impossible to spy for "Britain" as a political entity, English spies (and if necessary Scottish and Irish spies) belong in their own category.

Security Service[edit]

Why are Security Service officers listed here? MI5 are not spies. They are however spycatchers and national security agents. Quite different. Yes, they gather information/intelligence, but so do police officers, customs officials, government tax investigators etc (none of whom are described as spies). 86.17.210.229 14:59, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
