Matrosenfeldwebel[edit]

In Germany we haven't got an enlisted rank called Matrosenfeldwebel or Matrosenhauptfeldwebel for example. Please see at the external link to the rank insignia of the Bundesmarine.

Fähnrich translation[edit]

I always thought that Fähnrich was an ensign. That would line up more with the note that a Fähnrich is an officer candidate AND it makes sense from an etymological view point: the root of 'Fähnrich' is 'Fahne', which is German for 'flag', similar to 'ensign', which along with being a rank is also another word for 'flag'. And just as a sidenote, Ensign Hornblower (from the Horatio Hornblower series) is translated as Fähnrich Hornblower (I know that doesn't actually prove anything, but I thought it'd be an interesting fact.) The list does not mention the rank of Oberfähnrich (officer candidate), which equals the rank Hauptfeldwebel.PB
