I'm pretty sure I screwed up Warda's name in Arabic, maybe someone who actually knows arabic could fix that. --Johnkarp 23:30, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

It's good. --212.139.115.49 20:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Algerian Rose??[edit]

Translating her name as "The Algerian Rose" is not correct. While her first name, Warda, means rose in Arabic, it's not used here as a descriptive noun. It's just used as a person's first name (much like a woman called Rose). If the name is to be literally translated it should be "Rose the Algerian" or "Rose from Algeria", but this is not how it's perceived in the Arab world. --Jak123 (talk) 20:47, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Internet searches show that a very large number of blogs, newspapers and other news outlets, and even books, use that epithet. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 10:18, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see! Your edits are a good compromise. I'm not sure about the source of this translation though. Warda used to sing in Egyptian dialect and little emphasis is given to her Algerian origin when discussing her as a singer. I think that translating it as "The Algerian Rose" puts too much emphasis on her origin. Anyways, thanks for the edits. --Jak123 (talk) 19:45, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a translation but an epithet. I doubt that those who used it had any idea about dialects or her origin and its significance or lack of it. It's quite understandable that a singer named "Rose the Algerian" will be dubbed "The Algerian Rose". -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 06:35, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
