Second (?)[edit]

My hearts go out to all involved in the tragedy.

Wasnt this the third tragedy, after Apollo and Challenger?

AntonioMartin

Apollo was not a *space shuttle* mission. Dze27

Payload specialist (?)[edit]

Wasn't he the payload specialist

No, he was not. See http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/ and other wiki articles B

From that page...

The STS-107 crew: Seated in front are Commander Rick D. Husband, Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla and Pilot William C. McCool. Standing are Mission Specialists David M. Brown, Laurel B. Clark and Michael P. Anderson, and Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon Vera Cruz

Yes you're right Vera...some one screwed up my original posting from that website on the disaster page. B

'Internment'[edit]

Not a bad article, but I must admit that my skin crawls a bit when I see 'internment' and Auschwitz in the same sentence. I'm unsure it's the right word; One doesn't usually think of interners (uh, there has to be a better word here) intending internees for death, which was fairly clearly the intent. Could we think of a better word? (Imprisonment? Captivity? I'm unsure if there's a non-POV word that would work, but internment seems rather...happy-sounding. Like you got locked in a resort somewhere.) -134.198.241.50 23:48, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
  • Imprisonment seems to imply criminal captivity (whether or not that is the textbook definition). I prefer "captivity". Objections to an edit to "captivity", or some other word? (i.e. would like to rule out "internment" for the previous poster and "imprisonment" when describing being "in" Auschwitz) jewbacca 00:36, May 23, 2004 (UTC)

Other Jews in Space?[edit]

Has the question of observing Jewish religious practices while in space never come up before? (I'm assuming that there have been Jews in space before Ramon, most likely Jewish-Americans.) --ThorstenNY 19:55, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your question is answered at the bottom of the Telegraph article Jerusalem We Have a Problem. BTW this article also shows that the phrase was coined much before it was used by the rabbi at the commemoration, so I'm not sure why his use of it is mentioned in the article. 70.21.2.147 (talk) 02:33, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
U.S. Astronaut Judith Resnick was Jewish. source link AFAIK, she was the first Jew in space. However, as far as I know, she did not request kosher food. Not all Jews keep kosher. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rooster613 (talkcontribs) 00:23, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So was David Wolf and Jeff Hoffman. and either way neither was Ramon religious - he just felt that he represented world Jewry User:Mkonikov —Preceding undated comment added 13:37, 18 June 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Conspiracy Theory[edit]

Given that there are no citations offered, nor any links to anywhere supporting this so-called conspiracy, does this tye of rubbish really belong on the Ilan Ramon page?

Status: Dead[edit]

That seems a bit blunt to me.

Yeah, I'm changing it to deceased. SirParagon 03:58, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tu Bishvat[edit]

I am removing this:

and his Yartzeit is exactly 2 weeks after Tu Bishvat, the Jewish holiday celebrating trees (and new fruits), also called Rosh HaShanah La'ILANot.

This is pointless. If his Yahrtzeit was at least on the same it may have had some shadow of relevance, but "two weeks" is arbitrary. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Place of death[edit]

What the source says is "The pages [of his diary] were found in a field just outside of Palestine, Texas", not that he died there. I'm restoring this to be consistent with the infoboxes of ALL the other astronauts who perished in this accident. Eat memory (talk) 08:31, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm agreeing with you here. I changed it back to "Over Texas." The article cited only mentioned the diary being found in Palestine, TX, and makes no mention of his death location. Considering the debris field stretched a couple hundred miles, basing his place of death on a specific piece a debris is rather arbitrary. MrStoneman (talk) 06:29, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A Crater on the Moon[edit]

It should be added that there's a crater named after Ramon on the moon, inside the Apollo crater, as there are for the rest of his friends. Details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_%28crater%29 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.229.157.12 (talk) 15:32, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

Assaf Ramon, who also tragically died in an aircraft accident, should have all the content merged into this page (though much of it already exists here). For better or worse, every Israeli pilot, regardless of their parentage, does not deserve their own page. Bangabandhu (talk)

I agree. No case has even been proposed, let alone substantiated, for the notability of this person. RolandR (talk) 12:54, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of son's name: Asaf or Assaf?[edit]

I have seen it spelled both ways in reliable publications. I am not sure what to use, but would like to be consistent.

Spanish ancestry[edit]

Could somebody, please, investigate the ancient Spanish ancestors of Ilan Ramon? (Perhaps creating a new article for the surname). It would help to avoid mistakes like the one Mr. Ramon made when considered this surname "more Israeli".
The name Ramón is Spanish. It's used more as a given name and it became also a surname because until the 15th century Spanish people used the name of the father as surname, sometimes without any alteration, like this one.
You can check this at this application at the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE). You only have to push the "Total" icon, fill in the Surname and push "Submit" to get a list and a map showing the distribution of frequencies of the surname through the Spanish provinces. 81.61.3.80 (talk) 17:58, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

His name has nothing to do with anything Spanish. He took the name from Makhtesh Ramon in the Negev, which was called Wadi Ruman in Arabic. Israel's founders Hebraicized it to "Ramon". If you read Hebrew, see a linguistic explanation here: https://hebrew-academy.org.il/2019/03/26/%d7%a8%d7%9e%d7%95%d7%9f/. Yitz711 (talk) 16:44, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ilan Ramon

Ilan Ramon (June 20, 1954 – February 1, 2003) was an Israeli fighter pilot and later the first Israeli astronaut. Ramon was a Space Shuttle payload specialist on STS-107, the final mission of Space Shuttle Columbia, in which he and the six other crew members were killed when the spacecraft disintegrated during re-entry. At the age of 48, he was the oldest member of the crew. Ramon is the only foreign recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, which he was awarded posthumously by the United States Congress. This official NASA portrait of Ramon, wearing an Advanced Crew Escape Suit, was taken in 2001.
