French-language version[edit]

Somebody who knows more French than me ought to convert the history of the Place de la Bastille from the French Wikipedia. I particularly like the bit about the monument en forme d'éléphant. --Paul A 08:40, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The Mysterious Elephant[edit]

It would appear the elephant in the Moulin Rouge was scrapped from the 1889 World's Fair, at least one website actually calls it the "Bastille Elephant" [1], unfortunately without further detail. Maybe there's an indirect link indeed. Equendil 16:43, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No link to the plaster elephant 'trial monument' proposed as a place de la Bastille centrepiece, but perhaps a (recuperated) link to the fact that that elephant, Alexandre Dumas' home to Gavroche, stood on the flanks of Montmartre. The elephant pictured may have been the paper-maché work of some artist, but I have found no trace of any elephant, in all the documents I have/have researched on the 1889 exposition, at least of this size. In any case, judging from the ears, I would presume that this was an African elephant, thus perhaps originating from a same-continent-country pavillion. Please prove me wrong on the existence of a such sculpture. But for the theory that this was the original "Bastillle elephant", no way! THEPROMENADER 19:45, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the orginal one was never made(the propper one... however the artical says that there was a scale model built. i would also like to know if the "rundown monument" from Les Miserable that Little Gavroche lived in (im working from the wiki "Plot guide" to les mis... so i might be wrong here) was the scale model, the scale model on the same location, the begginings of the real monument.... or just Victor Hugo's created one? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sean2074 (talk • contribs)

Ok, let's make things clear here:
  • An elephant cast in bronze was orginally planned in 1808 on the place de la Bastille, I believe approximatively on the current location of the Opera Bastille.
  • A full scale model was built out of wood and plaster at that location, it was demolished in 1846. This was that elephant, at that location, falling in ruin, that was featured in Les Misérables.
  • In 1889, the World's Fair was in Paris (Exposition Universelle de 1889 exactly 100 years after the storming of the Bastille. I've spent a few hours earlier reading official documents [2] about the Exposition, Bastille doesn't seem to be mentionned (and no significant part of the fair took place in the area). I didn't find mention of an elephant either (but then, there's thousand of scanned pages, and in between the impressive colonial pavillions, the Eiffel Tower, or the immense exhibition halls, it may well be a foot note).
  • Later that same year, the Moulin Rouge opened its door, it featured amongst other things, an elephant from the World's Fair. Quite clearly, there was a rather large and hollow elephant somewhere at the fair. It *wasn't* the model of Napoleon's elephant, which had been demolished.Equendil 01:11, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help, I can't seem to fix this[edit]

I tried to revert it back to the Feb 27 version before the recent anonymous changes. There may be some new information in the mess but the previous page was destroyed in the process. Both of my attempts failed. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Gavroche42 16:16, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
