Function[edit]
It is curious that the function of chorale preludes is not fully and definitively known. Certainly Sweelinck was required to write such in order to familiarise the congregation with hymn melodies. This much is known, but how exactly the chorale prelude was used in the liturgy seems far less certain. If it was used to introduce the hymn to be sung, then some congregations on certain days would be waiting a very long time - such as O Mensch bewein by JS Bach (Good Friday). Certainly if you go to major parish churches in Germany today, the organist will begin with a flourish, sometimes perceptibly based on the upcoming hymn to be sung, at the end of which the congregation automatically starts to sing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.43.59.159 (talk) 15:52, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

- Should be moot, since I rewrote it (it could be expanded further, but really the big article should be chorale setting, of which chorale prelude is a subtype, along with chorale fantasia, chorale ricercar, chorale cantata, etc.) Thanks to an anon for improving my late-night prose. :-) Antandrus 16:04, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Interlanguage problem[edit]
As you try to get from the English chorale prelude to the Choralvorspiel on German Wiki, all of a sudden you get redirected to Liturgisches Orgelspiel. And you can't get out of it, which is to say that if you wanted to go FROM Choralvorspiel TO Preludio corale or Prélude de choral or Chorale prelude, "you can't get there from here." Merge Chorale setting (organ) into this article?[edit]
Seems like a logical choice: there's little in both articles that doesn't overlap, and this one's the more conventional name. --Francis Schonken (talk) 11:51, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

- @Francis Schonken: Well, the content that is on that page is only a few sentences. I don't think any of those is particularly worthy of notice, especially given the fact that they are all already in this article (in slightly altered forms, but still) and that they are unsourced.
