Trade union or federation?[edit]

Is CGT a trade union, like the article currently states, or is it actually a federation of more or less independent regional and sectoral trade unions? My Spanish is a bit rusty, but judging from the name and the organisation's homepage it seems like the latter case. / Alarm 13:36, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would say it is both. I mean, in Spain, large national trade unions like the CGT, UGT and CC.OO. operate in a decentralised way, but nobody would think of them as a federation. We always think of them as trade unions. In fact, the term "federación" (federation) means "subdivision" when it comes to Spanish trade unions. For example: la federación del metal, "the metal (workers') subdivision of our union" which is free to sign their collective bargaining agreement as they please, unless we have agreed to a national all-economy-encompassing agreement. elroble@planet-save.com

Renaming this article[edit]

In accordance with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English), I would like to move this article to General Confederation of Labour. The current WP policy states, in part, "If you are talking about a person, country, town, film, book, or video game, use the most commonly used English version of the name for the article, as you would find it in other encyclopedias and reference works. This makes it easy to find, and easy to compare information with other sources." Does anyone object? - N1h1l (talk) 23:19, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose, most English sources would use the name in the original. - Francis Tyers · 10:36, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
