There is some question as to the accuracy of the claim that the lake level was planned to be raised by 30 metres. This is a complex issue. Other sources (A. F. Mark Integrating conservation with hydro-electric development of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau, New Zealand: an exercise in complexity) suggests that Lake Manapouri was to be raised by 8 to 11 metres.

Lake Levels[edit]

The original 1960 proposal was to raise the lake level by 30 metres. But this would have flooded the lakeside township of Te Anau, so was reduced to 23 metres, raising Lake Manapouri to the same level as Lake Te Anau. Subsequent engineering studies revealed that Manapouri could only be raised by 8.4 to 11.3 metres.

CPI inappropriate as project cost inflator[edit]

The use of the CPI as a project cost inflator is inappropriate --- the GDP deflator method is better suited. The 2008 figure should really be recalculated. Robbiemorrison (talk) 13:29, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of Manapouri[edit]

A recent edit changed all instances of the name Manapouri to Manapōuri (other than the article title). There is currently insufficient widespread use of the spelling Manapōuri (with a macron) to meet the Wikipedia policy for place names as set out in WP:NCNZ, or the requirements of WP:COMMONNAME for article titles. Also, the NZ Gazeteer of Place Names does not use the form with a macron. Kā Huru Manu (https://www.kahurumanu.co.nz/atlas) gives Manapōuri as the name of Shallow Bay at the north-eastern end of the lake and Moturau as the name of the lake itself. The NZ Gazetteer reference lists the name as "recorded" but not official (a large proportion of NZ place names have just been allowed to develop without being formally bestowed). I would class Kā Huru Manu as being more authoritative than the Gazetteer for the spelling of the name simply due to the former being more up to date (apart from anything else, it was difficult to type letters with macrons until recently).
