Untitled[edit]

I removed the Wiktionary template and made glue a disambiguation page. 'Glue' has too many meanings to be a proper encyclopedia entry, but it is needed because many people will start a search for pointers to more specific pages at this general term. Femto 14:05, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Back again, to a bare disambiguation page. The general main page is adhesive for all stuff sticky. The glue title is ambiguous and should never need directly be linked to. The Egyptian use of hide glue wasn't at all related to super glue for example. Refer to specific topics instead, such as the newly-created animal glue article. More glue types[edit]

Here are some more glue types that could be added to the list:

Since I am not an expert on glue types i realize that some of the above may already be listed under other names so the alternate names should at least be added in parentheses. This list comes from the 'Pocket Ref]] by Thomas J. Glover. (2nd Edition - © 2000).

Also plastic cements such as methyl-ethylketone while technically solvents are commonly mistaken as glue and may this should be mentioned too. --Cab88 20:08, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to improve the list of glue types[edit]

After reviewing the disambiguation page I have a few suggestions on how to incorporate the above list of mine into the article:

  • Make sure every major glue category (i.e. resin, cement, epoxy, etc.) has it's own listing on the page. Many already do but I think some do not.
  • List various sub-types under the major categories. Each sub-type should be properly covered in the articles on the major categories of glue (i.e. all types of resin glues should be separately mentioned under resins (or resin glues).
  • Make sure the alternate names for various glues are mentioned.
  • Some solvents, such as plastic cement, are used like glues. So even though they may not technically be glues they should be mentioned too, clarifying their true status a solvents though. --Cab88 20:45, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of more glue types[edit]

I've been bold and added a bunch of additional glue types. I've grouped many of them by category such a Resin, Cement, Animal or plant-based, etc. Some are not categorized as I didn't know what if any category they would fit under. Some of the glue types do not have article yet. I have information of them but it would only be enough to create a stub. I have a some basic info on all the glue types listen but I'm not sure in what form it should be added to Wikepedia. I have come up with the following the following possible options:

  • Create stubs and hope that enough info can be added to them to make the full fledge articles.

or

  • Create articles covering the major categories not already covered. Provides basic info such as common characteristics, uses, etc. on the sub-types of glue for these categories within the category's article.

or

  • Move the entire list to an article titled something like "Types of glue" and provide brief description of each glue after each listing with links to any more in depth articles already in existence. This article would simply point to the list rather then list all the specific glue types.

I'll open it up to anyone interested to offer their opinion as to which one of the above suggestion seems best, if any and I will be happy to add the info in whatever form seems most agreeable. --Cab88 10:40, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bold is good, nice work so far. This page should limit itself to simple, one-line disambiguation descriptions. A separate "types of glue" list would essentially have the same content as the adhesive article, wouldn't it? So I think the organization by categories and sub-types seems the most promising. A chart organized by materials bonded together (such as wood, plastic, metal, glass, stone etc) that shows which glue bonds those materials would be very helpful to users and shoppers.

Please add orphan[edit]

The page: Glue stick is an orphan and no pages link to it. I think it is a PVA glue, but am not sure. Can someone add it to the right place? Thanks. BAxelrod 16:21, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They can be PVP or PVA based, so added them below the PVA entry. Let's hope it sticks and doesn't fall off. (Info gathered from a quick web search around stamp collectors, a chinese business directory, and a chemical supplier. You just seem to can't get any type of decent, concrete product description from corporate websites. Telling what the stuff actually is they expect you to buy? Pfff. Proposal[edit]

I propose the following high-level categories: thermoplastics (hot glues), solvents (model-airplane glue), thermosets (CA, epoxy). I'm not sure where some others would go, though. Things like white glue and rubber cement may all be "cements" in that they dry out as a solvent (water or an organic solvent) evaporates. Thoughts? —Ben FrantzDale 23:38, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

temperature service ranges?[edit]

Which adhesives have the best temperature service ranges after curing? Silicone seems to be one of the better at resisting high temps. This article would be better with some comparison tables. -69.87.200.177 (talk) 23:24, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
