April 2009[edit]

My apologies. Upon looking at the information, I see now why you were removing the template. I monitor the recent changes, and your removing a large portion of content repeatedly without justifying it in the edit summary appeared suspicious and was reverted. To avoid confusion in the future, may I suggest that you make use of the edit summary? This will ensure that any edits you that make in good faith aren't immediately reverted. Again, sorry for the confusion. (And may I suggest you review Talk page guidelines?) Thanks, Ono (talk) 14:55, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is nice to see an editor taking an interest in some of the tens of thousands of articles that are all but abandoned. I thank you for your efforts to bring these articles up to date. Thanks, Ono (talk) 15:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why i edit International RL Players[edit]

How can players just be called an Australian player when they havent played for them even when they have what about the other country they are allowed to represent are they just forgotten and the international rl eligibilty rule is a joke hayne can play for fiji one year then play for australia and tonie carrol can play for australia and new zealand so it doesnt matter any way as to what international rl category they are as long as they are able to represent them if they have a grand father/mother or father then they can play for them and i have to edit the international league pages to show how much players can represent the weaker teams for people who dont know much about international league i hope you understand why edit the way i do and hope you let me continue my editing in the future as its only fair to include all the countries they are able to represent under the current eligibility rules.58.165.209.77 (talk) 10:36, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RL players are called Australian even when they haven't represented Australia because they have Australian nationality. Offiah doesn't have a Nigerian passport, wasn't born there, didn't grow up there and didn't play representative sport for them.GordyB (talk) 12:46, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rugby union in Africa[edit]

Thanks for adding cats to this. This was the continent I was least looking forward too (too many damn countries - Asia would be in the same boat, if more Asians played!)

I pinched the idea of rugby union by continent from the RL pages. It's not meant to supersede the "by country" pages, but should hopefully fill a gap, as many RU competitions are transnational.--MacRusgail (talk) 18:20, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your blanking of the redirect page. If you wish to see it deleted, take it to WP:AfD. Drmies (talk) 19:05, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed I will but in the meantime there is no need for an abusive term to have a redirect page.GordyB (talk) 20:26, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can't say I approve of your edit summary; where I'm from that's a bit callous, and very pointy, to say the least. And you're right in the sense that it doesn't redirect to African-Americans, but oh so wrong in all other senses: the term has its own article. Anyway, I saw you took it to AfD and that is the right step. Drmies (talk) 23:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Referring to people as sub-humans because of the sport they play doesn't count as "callous"? Some double standard there. Nigger is significant enough in its own right to warrant an article "mungoball" is not but terms of abuse should certainly not redirect to those that they abuse.GordyB (talk) 12:06, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion please![edit]

What do you make of this - Rugby Soccer? --MacRusgail (talk) 20:21, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was unsure whether it was real or not. Maybe someone saw the name "rugby football", and changed it to "soccer" I don't know. Part of the reason for my uncertainty is that some genuinely bizarre hybrids do exist, such as football tennis and chess boxing--MacRusgail (talk) 16:58, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Soviet Union[edit]

Thanks for the edit. I would appreciate any comments on the article... I think currently it talks a bit too much about the political set up, although this is important.

However, I've just come up with a new piece of evidence, which suggests that rugby football was indeed played in Russia as far back as the 1880s (which puts it way before the split, and the 1908 date given). What's more surprising, perhaps, is that it transpires that rugby may predate soccer in the Russian Empire!

I've gone through a book by James Riordan called Sport in the Soviet Union, which was published back in the 1970s. It's turned out to be a real goldmine, and has resolved some of the contradictory information that I had been given in sources elsewhere (such as rugby being banned during a period in which other sources claim it was being played). There isn't a vast amount on rugby union in it, but more than enough to go on, and what's there is more than enough to sort out a few of the issues.--MacRusgail (talk) 16:39, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--

Thanks for your kind advice. I need to get the Huw Richards information in there, and also I'll try and fill out the story of Llanelli in Moscow which looks an interesting one. It's been hard to track down some of the information - I've even used the National Library of Scotland to source some of it. My philosophy is that while most readers of Wikipedia will head for articles on the 6N, Jonny & Jonah, that they're well served elsewhere (online and off), and that it is difficult (impossible?) for us to improve on them. However, on a subject like this, I think it's quite possible for us to be the best - probably also on Tier 2 nations as well. The article should have stuff in it, which one can't find elsewhere online (at least not in English)

Still, I reckon Soviet rugby must be a big historical "what if?" If the USSR had survived a decade more, and if they had got into the first RWC, then I think we would have seen teams of at least the calibre of Romania. (Probably full of steroids and shamateurs!) Instead they took the huff at SA, which wasn't even in it, and by the time '91 had come around, the USSR was dead. (Which was good in some ways, but a disaster for the game). Unless the old SA etc counts, and pre-WWII Italy and Japan, rugby doesn't seem to thrive in dictatorships. Romania's definitely the odd one out in that regard. --MacRusgail (talk) 14:36, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello GordyB! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 1,590 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Reviewer rights[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 15:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Rugby Forum[edit]

Given that The Rugby Forum covers NRL and Super League, it spans both "flavours" of rugby, union and league. Accordingly, it is rightfully in the categories of both, and it rightfully should not be referred to as a "rugby union" site, but generically a "rugby" site. —C.Fred (talk) 20:34, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I too would like to lend my voice to this. While some wording can, and will be looked at, it is not a rugby union only site. One of the owners is primarily a rugby league supporter. The appropriate term would be either just rugby or rugby football. We can then look at which sections pertain more to union or more to league. Rowlan (talk) 09:19, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I also would like to throw my 2 cents in. Stop editing the article for which you have no knowledge of. If you are a rugby league fan then all well and good and it would be welcoming to get you onto the forum but don't edit the article please when you have no idea of the forum. Welshman25 (talk) 09:33, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In response to your last message, no one has nominated any rugby league players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at TRF. So your argument is invalid and shows that you have only glanced over the top and not got involved with the members. Its quite rich when people like yourself edit pages that they lack any knowledge of the subject purely for the fact they think they know better and show a good level of arrogance when told better. Featherstone RUFC[edit]

Hi, I notice that you have made contributions to the Featherstone article. The current rugby league club, Featherstone Rovers, wasn't founded until 1902, and appears to have no links to the earlier rugby union (RU) club. However, I have contributed to an article about James "Jimmy" Metcalfe, and I have found details of him playing for Yorkshire (RU) in 1896/7 while playing at Featherstone (RU), would you have any information about the RU club of the 1800s in Featherstone. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 13:22, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response, if you could ask at a rugby league forum, that'd be great. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:39, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for getting around to this article late, there's a bit of a backlog at copyright patrol just now. I've tagged the section as being a close paraphrase of the source. I think that it does need to be rewritten in your own words from scratch, since it's clear that you did follow the source, and it remains very close in parts. Just for an example of where it follows closely, you wrote:

Over the next few years, the club went on to win three other cup competitions and had nine players win county caps. In 2003, with the original under-14 team reaching adulthood, efforts to establish new under-12s and under-11s sides failed, and the club struggled for survival.

where the source says

Over the following years the club went on to win three other cup competitions and saw 9 players compete at representative county level. In 2003, with the original U14 team reaching adulthood, endeavours to establish the new U12’s and U11’s teams failed, and the club battled for existence.

The person who started has done some bizarre things in the article, who needs a cleanup, and he insist in removing him from the Romanian rugby union players category, claiming the article os overcategorized, but insists in puting him in the People from Leeds and 1987 Rugby World Cup categories, where he is the only player.Mistico (talk) 03:32, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Dave Woods (rugby league coach) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Iffley Road rugby football ground until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. You got away with deleting this last time because you didn't bother to tell either of the two rugby Wikiprojects what you were doing. I don't know what your agenda is but you are unlikely to get away with it this time. Any fool can see that it is notable.GordyB (talk) 20:03, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are an experienced editor, so I'm not going to slap a template on your talk page. But I am going to ask you to make very sure that you do not again copy-paste copyright material into Wikipedia. To do so is against policy, for very good reasons that must be obvious to you; it also damages the project because people can spend time working on what has been added, only to find that it has to be deleted down the road. That is my agenda, by the way, since you ask.
You've already been told that the Wikiprojects were notified of the previous PROD; the creator of that copyvio article was also notified. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 01:32, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, they weren't. This time there have been at least three other people involved after I contacted the three wikipedia projects last night. Last time you got your own way because nobody else knew about it and there were thus no dissenting opinions. Amazing how people bothered to vote this time when they didn't last time. It is also amazing that nobody but you has voted for "delete". And if you bothered to check the facts you'd have noticed that I didn't edit the article last time around so any copy-vio is nothing to do with me.GordyB (talk) 18:26, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Contributor copyright investigation[edit]

After processing the copyright listing at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2014 May 20, where I did confirm copying albeit in small amounts, and confirming that this is an issue you've had flagged before on your talk page, I did a look at your contribution history and unfortunately have verified copyright issues, both with content copied from outside of Wikipedia and from content copied from one Wikipedia page to another without meeting the terms of our license. Accordingly, I have opened Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/GordyB to facilitate review and cleanup of any additional issues. In addition to the one I noted immediately above, I have flagged several more problems already at that page. In order to avoid your being spammed with copyright notices, the CCI process asks that taggers do not place templated notices at your page. Sometimes people will do so from habit and with good intentions. Please feel free to remove them. If you want to keep an eye on issues, you should rather watch your CCI page and its linked subpage.

To be clear, the primary issues here are:

  • Copying from Wikipedia pages to other Wikipedia pages without attribution. Content on Wikipedia is not public domain, but is liberally licensed for reuse. That reuse, however, requires a minimum attribution standard, among other conditions, which must be met with either a full list of contributors or a link to the original page. Please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for more about why this attribution is required and how it is supplied.
  • Copying and closely paraphrasing from other sites. Information taken from other websites and placed on Wikipedia must be written in your own words and structure, unless you are using a brief and clearly marked quotation. Wikipedia:Copy-paste gives a good overview of our approach to copyrighted content, with links to relevant policies and guidelines. There are some verbatim illustrative passages of issues at the CCI page, if you'd like to see an example of the issue. So far, it seems to me that this was more of a problem earlier in your career, although as I noted at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2014 May 20, I did find some continuing copying in recent work. While the issue I addressed there is nowhere near as substantial as those older problems, it does suggest that you may not have realized when notified of the issue three years ago how careful you should be to rewrite material.

If you have any questions about copyright or the CCI, you are welcome to leave them at my talk page. You are also welcome to continue editing, but please be careful moving forward. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:07, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fuck this witch hunt. Suddenly now you have attribute when you move data from one Wikipedia page to another. I've been editing since 2003. There was no such rule in place in 2003 nor was there this paranoia about copyright. Now you want to go through 11 years of contributions. Well good luck with that one. In the meantime many of my articles on rugby clubs' history were copy-pasted by the clubs and stuck on their website. No doubt I'll be the one deemed guilty. The Wikilawyers and deletionists seem to have taken over. Sadly the "don't be a dick" rule seems to have been lost. Seriously the article on close paraphrasing that I was advised to read only had its first draft in 2009, I'd been editing for six years before that, how was I supposed to have read it?GordyB (talk) 22:58, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
GordyB, I'm with you, while looking for references I've found that Wikipedia articles to which I initiated and have been the majority contributor have been cut 'n' paste to external websites, which is fair enough, but I wouldn't take too kindly to it if I was then accused of plagiarism. This seems like self-important bureaucrats creating work to enhance their pompous belief that they in fact indispensable and they have the cheek to ask the WikiProject Rugby league to undertake the donkey work, what a set of cunts. Personally, if I'd been subject to the witch hunt you have, I'd tell Wikipedia and its self-serving bureaucrats fuck right off... and relax. Best Regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 08:41, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but you shouldn't be acting like a victim here GordyB. There may be external websites that have just copied-and-pasted from wikipedia (which is bad for us all), but you have clearly copied-and-pasted from copyright sources. I don't necessarily think it was malicious, but it happened. It can be pretty easy to check, looking at archives from archive.org/web from before the edits for example. In other cases you actually mentioned in the edit summary that you got the material from an external site (which is why I'm not convinced what you've done is malicious -- but regardless, it's still a problem)! For example [1], [2], and [3] from the ARU. In others it was so clear it's not funny -- for example [4] from [5] -- your edit was 2006, but this snapshot [6] was from 2005. The problem is now we can't be sure which of your edits were copyright infringements and which weren't. This sucks for all involved, so please don't get upset -- you should be apologising. -- Shudde talk 09:19, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Self-appointed, self-serving, self-important, self, self, self, whether in the real world or virtual, there’s always someone who feel that it’s their right have dominion over others, hiding behind a curtain of rules and regulations that were not democratically agreed upon, and that only the self-appointed, self-serving, self-important can even bother to read. Those who can do; those who can’t appoint themselves as a bureaucrat, standing on the shoulders of others, trying to achieve some semblance of notability in their sad little world by doing others down. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:31, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I assume by "rules and regulations that were not democratically agreed upon" you don't include copyright law? What will you say to a lawyer from the BBC or the Australian Rugby Union, or wherever else that asks: "why is our copyrighted material on your website and listed under a CC licence"? Maybe you cant rant to them and see what they say? By the way, I create content ("Those that do"), I don't rip-off other people's as my own. -- Shudde talk 11:15, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you were correct and there is a direct cut ’n’ paste, I doubt whether, e.g. Banglacricket (The home of the Tigers’ cricket) can claim a copyright, even if they stick a © symbol on their website. They’ve had 9-years to complain, so Banglacricket are obviously not as troubled by it as you are. If the BBC or the Australian Rugby Union were to complain about any Wikipedia content, apart from being a public relations disaster for them, all that would happen is an agreement to take down the offending content. 97-articles in 8-years; don’t knock yourself out will you. As an aside you say you “fell into editing rugby related articles years ago”, you haven’t you “fell into editing rugby union related articles years ago”, please correct this error immediately as I don’t want to be associated with the likes of you. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:25, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am correct, and it doesn't have to be a direct cut-n'paste (see WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE). The Contributor copyright investigation isn't an injustice, so stop crying about it. It's also up to 990 articles not just the ones he created; they could be deleted, and I'm not happy about it. If you don't care about copyright, you should probably not be editing (being one of the five pillars and all -- Wikipedia:Wikipedia is free content). Sorry mate, but rugby is rugby union pretty much everywhere, including where I'm from. I'll call the sport, or any sport, what I want (especially on my own userpage). But meh, I shouldn't be biting as you're resorting to random attacks now -- get over the investigation, it's trying to address a significant problem, and not some great conspiracy. Time to let it go. -- Shudde talk 13:10, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Significant problem" my arse, as you’re so bothered about it why don't you take a couple of months off from article creation and "correct" the situation, I'm sure Wikipedia can manage without the 2-articles you'd have created in that time. DynamoDegsy (talk)
  • User:GordyB, it is understandable that in the early years you may not have understood the requirement of the license for moving content from one page to another, but Wikipedia's copyright rules have always forbidden stuff like this:
Source Source text Text you placed in the article
[7] The improving quality of fixtures demanded a change in attitude to training and playing as the sixties became the seventies. Under the leadership of the great hooker Ken Kennedy, with the assistance of exceptional players like Mick Molloy and Barry Bresnihan, London Irish became a force to be reckoned with once more. In 1976-77 the Rugby Football Union introduced proper club merit tables and in that season London Irish finished first in the London Division with six wins out of seven. This is just one example. This is not a close paraphrase, although the more recent guideline may help you avoid issues of that sort, which you have also had. This is a direct copy-paste. You put this content on Wikipedia on 9/27/2004. The archived link above shows that they did not copy it from you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For GordyB's eyes only...[edit]

Look at them, just fucking look at them, these fucking bureaucrats love making a drama out of anything. There'll soon be more fucking bureaucrats than editors, and more fucking guidelines than articles. I'm really close to a tipping point with this shower of fucking gobshites. Harlequins Rugby League[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Harlequins Rugby League a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into London Broncos. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you.
