Use of "Dr." and "Ph.D."

Hi Viriditas. I've responded on the DD talk page to both Humus sapiens and your comments. Please consider reverting to his latest version (with the POV tag) so that editors replying to the RfC understand what the issue is. I'm not trying to push an agenda here, I'm only trying to get clarification on the Dr./Ph.D issue. Monkeyman 22:57, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed the RfC. I'll resubmit this particular question with a less polarizing figure as an example. If you know if/where this particular issue is addressed in wikipedia style policy, please let me know. (I've looked but couldn't find it anywhere.) Monkeyman 23:10, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

cannabis cats

hi viriditas,

a week or so ago i created category:Cannabis legal reform, and as there's some overlap there with the activists cat you've been filling out, i figured i'd mention it. perhaps activists should be a sub-cat of legal reform?

--Heah talk 03:55, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

actually my first thought was to create an activists category, but since there were plenty of organizations and other stuff i went for the more general. So i have no desire at all for it to not exist, just wanted to touch base before I changed anything. I'll go through it tomorrow and decat people from legal reform and whatnot. cheers --Heah talk 07:39, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

My Mistake

Sorry, I shouldn't have tagged it as speedy. I was confused with another edit window I had open at the same time. I mean to merge it with owl, but then I noticed that you had added it to category:Owls so that became somewhat irrelevant. Sorry about that. Bobby1011 06:14, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Project Watchlist Bot

I'm finally getting around to replying to your request for a bot to update the project watchlist. I didn't know anything about bots at the time. So, I went and learned. But then there was a wikipedia bug. Now, I've written a bot, and am waiting for approval to run it. Assuming it gets approved, I'll use it to update the WikiProject Hawaii watchlist every few days (which may be unnecessary for WP:Hawaii, but the Numismatics project is changing very rapidly). Thanks for the suggestion -- it's led me on a very interesting journey. Ingrid 00:11, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Category:Trees of Minnesota

Hi Viriditas - isn't this ridiculous over-categorisation? Will there be a similar cat for every state and province in North America? Consider the implications for a widespread species, which might thus end up in 60 or more categories and have a longer list of categories than there is text about it - MPF 12:20, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

"I don't see any "over-categorisation" at this time" - means you've not looked at the implications! Do you propose to add every species of plant that occurs in every state or province to each such category? Most such areas have a flora 2,000-5,000 vascular plant species, and most of these species have distributions that cover several states or provinces. I can see there might be some value in continent-wide, or possibly national flora categories, but not by individual states etc. Also have you considered the definition of a 'tree'? - it isn't a very useful criterion as there is no real distinction between a tree and a shrub ('woody plant' might be better). - MPF 12:37, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks; though I see problems ahead with plants like e.g. Manitoba Maple, native in 5 Canadian provinces, 46 US states, and 3 Mexican states; if each had its own 'Category:Trees of X', that's 54 categories at the bottom of its page, on top of what it already has. Is that a realistic option? California is a bit of a special case, as its flora is to a large extent different from most of the rest of the US (shared a bit with OR, WA, NV, AZ, and Baja Calif.), but there's nothing in MN that doesn't also occur in one or more adjoining areas, as the eastern N American flora is uniform over larger regions than states - MPF 15:15, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Regarding adminship

Hi, actually the issues with SlimVirgin and Anonymous editor were from the past - about 4 months back - and I am amazed that they still hold a grudge against me. The fact remains that since that period there has hardly been any case of revert wars etc. or me behaving in any unruly fashion. Infact I've never even had issues or interactions with these people since then. But, some have chosen to judge me only from that period. Idleguy 13:51, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

New Pro-cannabis userbox

This user is pro-cannabis.

If you would like to have this on your userpage, just add {{User:Disavian/Userboxes/pro-cannabis}} to your userpage, and the box at right will appear on it. Also, if used in your user space, the page will be listed on Category:Pro-cannabis Wikipedians. If you would like to share it with someone else, type {{User:Disavian/Userboxes/pro-cannabis|stamp|right}}

Also, consider weighing in on the Wikipedia:Userbox policy poll.

Stand up and be counted while you still can,

Thank you very much for your message, but I don't feel that Wikipedia user pages are an appropriate place to push political agendas of any kind. I also don't support the use of userboxes at this time. —Viriditas | Talk 07:03, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough. I should point out, I see this box as a matter of affirming principle (bigotry and oppression are wrong), rather than pushing a political agenda (legalize it!). This is more in the sensibility of anti-racism userboxen.

I am pushing the wikipolitical agenda that things such as this should be allowed to exist, which is the main reason I created it now. I have found the experiment of disseminating via talk pages problematic, for example the language in the note above should be If you like..., and generally be less presumptuous. This was clumsy of me. Note that, prior to this anti-userboxen nonsense, I didn't have even a userpage, though I confess to being pleased with my new one (check it out).

Under different circumstances, I would simply have left it at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs, and let time take its course. A rogue admin has already tried to tear things up already and delete Category:Pro-cannabis Wikipedians, and the template's links to it.

Thanks all the same for your help over time,

sure. a category for groups (eg marijuana legalization parties) would probably be helpful too. It is certainly possible to run this for any language. You will need a place to host the bot though, unless you can work something out with Tawker. He can certainly fill you in on the details of what you would need to get it running. Regards joshbuddytalk 23:52, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok cool. If you need any features or there is something you'd like to pick up with it please ask. I'm going to put it in a repository somewhere, so that we can all keep up-to-date on the same code base. joshbuddytalk 23:56, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm running Tawkerbot2 on a surplus Intel Pentium II 300mhz processor, 512MB of PC2300 and a 6 GB HDD running Ubuntu Breezy, oh and a 10mbit network connection. It doesn't require much, network connectivity is the biggest thing. Sorry about the slow reply, I didn't notice this post for a while -- Tawker 17:28, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Aloha

Someone just suggested the category idea to me recently. I'm not sure what I would use it for. Plus, for numismatics, we have something like 1500 articles, and I'm not sure that that's recommended since categories update dynamically (not that I really know anything about that, but I just wouldn't want to do it without a good reason). Why do you remove my changes? Those dubious claims have been there for a few days with no citations. As well, ONE of them is redundant... there are two sentences which are virtually identical. I will also point out that the {{dubious}} link claims I can remove dubious facts immediately... Blocking a user

Can you tell me the process for filing a complaint against another user, blocking them from editing, or banning them? I am tired of dealing, day after day, with a POV pusher who is constantly denying, for example, that the BBC is a neutral source, is constantly challenging every statistic or sentence I include, and who states my images are propaganda yet puts up equally provacative images. It's just tiresome, juvenile, and unconstructive. Lokiloki 11:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Systemetic left wing bias

I'm not saying that there is, and I don't think there is. I was saying that to show that people with the opposite POV as Loki are saying it. I was hoping that he would see that his complaint about systemetic right wing and pro israel bias looks kinda silly when you see both sides insisting opposite bias.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 03:55, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

The Handover

What's the plan for the handover to the new topics? Will their be fireworks? Will the old article still claim authority? Can it be convinved to retire gracefully? Lokiloki 17:32, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, the problem is that the articles are becoming pretty discordant, as Humus and I are editing the temp article, and other people are editing the main article. I think it makes sense to move over now, or not at all. Lokiloki 18:32, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: Mancow

Honestly, I can't find anything either way in WP:NAME right now, but it gives no examples of using a nickname of a real person as an article, and I can't imagine that Mancow is a proper title here. I have brought it up on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions where hopefully something more definitive will come up. --W.marsh 23:18, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Yeah, that's an interesting point. Obviously we don't title articles about Prince, Madonna, etc. by their full real names as far as I know. If this is a similar case, then perhaps moving back would be a good idea, I must confess I've never heard of Mancow outside of this Wikipedia article. --W.marsh 23:23, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
I'll trust you on this, I'd be fine with that move now, if you believe he's widely known under that name and his real name is just a footnote. --W.marsh 23:28, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah go ahead and move it, or let me know and I will. Thanks for your patience. --W.marsh 23:32, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Silky Sullivan

I can't imagine why you thought it a good idea to put a fan's poem under a picture, or why you removed a quote, or why you changed the name of a heading. If you've a great reason for any of these changes, I'd like to hear about them. Seems to me after making these changes, you could have left a note explaining your intent. Or was it just a drive-by fiddle? Ki Longfellow 15:59, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I see you've been back making sweeping changes. Am I allowed some sort of discussion? I'd really appreciate it. I invite you to my place for a chat. 209.198.69.28 22:08, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

The recent images of Silky were given me by his last owner who permitted me to use them however I wished. One is simply a scan of an old calender page, and the other is a sketch given away on Silky Sullivan days, commissioned by his owner. If you feel that the layout is more in keeping with wikipedia, then I bow to your superior knowledge of such things. My instinctive feeling is that a picture facing right should be placed on the left side of the page, and vice versa. This is keep the eye on the article rather than taking it away. I can't imagine wikipedia having a rule for placing them the other way, but if it does, it does. Ki Longfellow 22:17, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

But I do thank you for adding Silky to births and deaths pages...making him a "person." Ki Longfellow 22:30, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I would appreciate your help. There's always someone wandering around and that someone always has yet another wikipedia "rule" which often turns out to be personal taste. It's actually quite hard to get a real handle on all this without becoming totally immersed. Help, though perhaps needed, is often conflicting. Especially about images. These last images of Silky were not taken from the internet but were gifts to me by their owner who actually does own them. These, I thought, would be fine. It's a virtual impossibilty to choose which tag to award them unless one is a copyright lawyer. I will be turning the images around again. Pointing them in. I also see you've renamed my sections. "History" is nice and dry and so encyclopediac, but it's not accurate. Heavens, what a falafel. Ki Longfellow 14:00, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, if my edit summary pertained to your edit; no offense was intended in that case. Nevertheless, my opinion is that the use of the word "claim" implies doubt in that particular context. Re: Category:Self-declared emperors and kings

There're people crowning themselves as emperors and kings, when their coups or revolutions were closed to be successful. Most of these people had short-live control over some certain territories, but are not recognised by historians owing to their short-live, and/or disregarded by their successors. IMHO, you should try to narrow the limit of people the category may cover. — Instantnood 18:27, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Your removal of category:occultism

You removed the category:occultism from the entry for S.L. Macgregor Mathers alsmost as soon as i added it, and you used as your rational that the article was alredy listed in category:hermeticism. It is aso listed in the category:esotericism, but you did not delete that, which makes your deletion of occultism seem arbitrary. I realize that these three catgories overlap to a certain extent, but i had a good reason for adding the category:occultism tag, namely that Mathers is listed on the page List of occult authors and it i my hope to develop that list into category status in the near future. At prsent i am going through WP looking for occult authors who are unlinked to the list (i have found dozens over the course of the past couple of days). I am also making red links to authors who should have short articles but have not yet been written up. I am intending to write these short pieces soon, and welcome help. In the meantime, since there is no list of hermetic authors, i would welcome your cooperation by re-listing or allowing me to re-list Mathers in categoy:occult preperatory to listing him in category:occult authors (when it bcomes a category). What do you say? Is this feasible for you? Catherineyronwode 04:37, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Unsigned message removal

Hi, considering that it's a guideline to sign one's messages, it appears somewhat inappropriate for someone to remove the unsigned notice. There doesn't seem to be a formal policy on the matter, so this is just the opinion of a few editors so far. We could discuss this further on Wikipedia talk:Sign your posts on talk pages and Template talk:Unsigned. Shawnc 22:56, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree that users should be allowed the option of omitting signature in their own userspace. I prefer that posters on article talk pages be identified, to assist in the communication. Perhaps some unregistered users do not wish to make their IP address visible in the talk pages (even though the IP can be retrieved in the history), but this does not apply to registered users. Shawnc 01:14, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I guess I can understand placentophagy being unregarded as cannibalism, even though it fits the technical definition (viz., a member of a sentient species consuming, in whole or in part, the body parts of a member of their own species). But why remove the pregnancy category? I've known quite a few new parents who greatly revered the consumption of the mother's placenta following a successful birth. And on top of that, the placenta, and therefore placentophagy, is directly related to pregnancy. Your thoughts, please. Avalyn 06:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Reconciling Jack Kerouac's last years

I was reading the Jack Kerouac page (we have both made substantial contributions to it) a few minutes ago and saw where you added a few sentences in regards to Kerouac spending his last few years alone with his mother in Northport, New York. (Last paragraph of the introductory section). In the main body of the article, it speaks of him living with his mother, and his third wife in St. Petersburg, Florida at the end of his life. I'm sure he did both; however, maybe we can work together and do a better job explaining this seemingly contradictory information in the article. The resources I have reviewed (mainly old talk St. Pete Times articles) talk about his life there.--Hokeman 02:55, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Removing external links section

First of all, I don't see why you're saying I'm violating WP:OWN at all; please assume good faith. The external links section was added here by an anon to link to NORML (note that only having a pro-cannabis site would be a violation of WP:NPOV). There was no previous discussion and no consensus to implement this. After that, there were several additions of spam websites, making it clear that the section would need a lot of monitoring by editors to make sure it didn't become completely full of spam. From this information, I decided to be WP:BOLD and remove the section entirely (until, of course, consensus was generated on the talk page, which would override boldness). I'm not really sure what the problem is. --Rory096 05:04, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: Cannibis

I replied on my talk. -- backburner001 04:02, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I disagree - the Menehune has cryptozoological angles and links in with Bigfoot. Small hairy hominids are also common sightings in South America where they are sometimes associated with flying saucers, as Bigfoot is associated with them in North America (see John Keel's The Complete Guide to Mysterious Beasts). There is no easy division between folklore, cryptozoology and the more paranormal aspects - if you wish to maintain a NPOV without imposing your own opinions on the subject matter then you have to include those aspects I'm afriad. (Emperor 22:50, 12 May 2006 (UTC))

Going by the definition of paranormal you posted on my talk page: "an observed phenomenon for which there is no agreeable rational explanation" - then they fit. They have been observed and there is no agreeable explanation. The entry itself says they are in the same league as airy folk and the Trickster both of which can easily fit int a paranormal category. I don't believe they are just legends or paranormal entities or relict hominoids but they could potentially be any one (or more) of those and until one is available for study (if that is even possible) we are going to have to define things as broadly as possible. Throwing in a category doesn't mean it is exclusively that - cryptozoology covers all possible angles from folklore to zoology to the paranormal. (Emperor 23:10, 12 May 2006 (UTC))
Its ironic - I state I have no belief about what they are (which you interpret as my somehow having a belief in it) and then you state "The menehune are a cultural phenomenon, not anomalous, and certainly not "paranormal". There is nothing paranormal about this article; this is the realm of history" - which shows you are the one that has clearly made up their mind. The citation for their sighting (and being hit by a car) is in one of the links I added [2]
Bottom line is I feel that, when it is unclear about the nature of the phenomena, we should try and make our classifications as broad as possible. My adding a Paranormal header doesn't mean its the only one that could be added - if you know of more that are relevant then add them in too. Or just take out the paranormal one if it upsets you so much - I am not going to lose any sleep over it. (Emperor 00:08, 14 May 2006 (UTC))

Native American Timeline

I'm signing off too. But Wiki has these timelines as well. See also:

Best wishes. WBardwin 07:22, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I looked over the Template:Timeline of the Migrations Period. Very nice. While you are thinking big - and trying to gather information -- why not create one on a smaller scale? Such a chart on the Ancient Pueblo Peoples/Anasazi could include Chaco and near-by ruins such as Hovenweep and Mesa Verde. I'm no "techie" but if you have the programming skills, I can help provide the information. Think it over. WBardwin 04:50, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I was thinking by culture site over time. Some of these sites just begin at a given Pecos Classifacation stage and die out at another. It appears the Anasazi people were much more mobile than their stone structures lead us urban types to believe. Because of the impressive ruins, people tend to think of these people as tied to one place. However, they appear to move in response to both social and environmental conditions. So a chart would show which culture sites have which PC characteristics, along with the current date estimates. I think it would be a great "picture" of the Anasazi culture. WBardwin 07:26, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I'll look over your links and the chart and compare with my books. I think I have at least one source that will give me a good start. Chaco is probably a good timeline to start with, as it was inhabited for a relatively short period of time, although the paleo groups wandered through at intervals in the early years. Will try and dig through the books ASAP. WBardwin 07:55, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm reading and taking notes for the timeline, and find myself making petty little edits all over. There is no article on the southwest pit house!! Have to create that one too. The Chaco article/section on cultural development contains good dated material for a beginning or for experimenting with in a format. While I'm researching again, would you support a seperate article on Pueblo Bonito, such as the one on Fajada Butte? How many of the Chaco sites are individually notable? Best. WBardwin 18:27, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
created a stub for Pueblo Bonito, using the old redirect page. Lots more information available, but lots of disagreements among archaeologists too. WBardwin 03:42, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

AOL Blocking

Re: your offer of help. I appreciate the offer and I may take you up on it. But -- it will take some time. I'm dealing with company protocols and security issues, as my employer pays for and configures my system to allow me to work at home. They insist on using AOL (or a cable company not available in my area). Any software I download and any sites I have to register with must be approved by my employer first. This process is not hard but it is time consuming. To date, I've not been denied permission -- but I suspect they wouldn't like Foxfire. Will let you know if I need help if/when the approval comes through. Best wishes. WBardwin 18:48, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Don't be misled by the volume of talk about blocks on my talk page -- I can go for long periods of time without a block and then they pile up for a day or three. I was simply out of state for the last few days, giving a workshop. I am afraid, however, that the admins are getting tired of my ongoing problem. And if so, I will have to take some action. The techs I work with are reasonable souls, the personal requests just have a lower priority, rationally enough. So ------- what do you want to talk about? Timelines? Should be around for much of the week -- but have two big projects due in the next six weeks. Best wishes. WBardwin 06:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Re Viridae

Hi. Although the usernames do present a similarity, I honestly don't see any risk of confusion due to this similarity. For instance, we have recently declined a request where the user wanted a username that was taken, so he requested to be named with that username followed by a full stop (as in "username."). Naturally, a single stop sign is too small a difference and could create problems, but "Viridae" and "Viriditas" are sufficiently different. We do have many other cases where usernames are somewhat close, but not really nearly identical, and no problems have emerged. I can actually speak from experience: there are at least two users out there who have the word "redux" in their usernames, and I've never seen any problems, for myself or for them, because of that. Still, you could always try to reach an understanding with Viridae himself. If you guys can agree on it, you can contact me anytime and I will perform whatever change you guys have agreed on (I would only require the links and/or diffs to the discussions you might have had). Regards, Redux 04:14, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Timelines

Noticed your name on Template:Timeline of Conquests of the Ottoman Empire -- is this the style you had in mind for Chaco Canyon? Can we incorporate the Pecos Classification stages into the time axis in some fashion? They are common reference points for students and would be familiar. Working on data -- hardest points seem to be the earlier dates of occupation. Construction dates for the Great Houses are pretty well established. Best.............WBardwin 06:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Internet Counter

Thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia. I was wondering, how difficult would it be for Wikipedia to add an Internet Counter to each article so it could be seen how many people have visited that article like, for example, in the past month and/or year? Any lingering doubts I might have had regarding that block (and I am always a doubter) have been delightfully cleared up by the ensuing spate of obvious Eddie vandalism to my user page. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 02:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Oops, I think that may have unintentionally come off with a sarcastic tone. It wasn't! I don't mind my page being vandalized in the least (it amuses me, I'm simple-minded I guess) and I'm glad to know it was in fact Eddie. If the vandalism becomes too much of a pain, there's always semi-protection.
The wiktionary question isn't stupid. I have heard that what they have done is to only allow AOL connections through https: (SSL-encrypted http), which AOL handles through proxies that don't jump around nearly so much. However, Wiktionary supposedly gets a lot less traffic than we do, and those SSL connections are a much bigger drain on the servers than regular connections, so enwiki can't afford to do that, performance-wise.
We have recently been granted the ability to set a block on an IP (or IP range) that won't trigger autoblocks on registered usernames, which makes blocking AOL ranges a little less awful in the case of major vandalism storms... but for the most part, the main tool is still reversion. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 02:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

San Francisco Burrito Merger

This minimal merge that you performed is totally inadequate. It violates the principle on the merger page which say There are two or more pages on related subjects that have a large overlap. Wikipedia is not a dictionary; there does not need to be a separate entry for every concept in the universe. For example, "Flammable" and "Non-flammable" can both be explained in an article on Flammability. There is too much general information on burritos in the San Francisco Burrito page. Just putting the summary on the Burrito page doesn't get to the heart of the problem here. Ortcutt 20:17, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I've about typed myself blue in the face with this editor, over a very minor word change from what I can tell. Regarding Healthy diet

Maybe it was the sentence "Healthy diet is both a concept and a problem and only applies to wealthy North Americans...", as well a the reference to Supersize Me, that lead me to believe the article was US-centric (rather than UK-centric). At any rate, I think the article is heavily biased towards the dietary problems of the Western World, particularly the US and the UK. Although I recently read that there are now about one billion obese people in the world, I still think that the 800 million people suffering from undernutrition and hunger should be featured more prominently. Was Atatürk a Muslim?

Thank you for your comments. I personally am not convinced that he truly considered himself a Muslim, although outwardly he made the appearance to be one (there are pictures of him praying). What his parents believed, is not relevant, in my opinion. I'll have to check his biographies for some detailed info, but the article certainly needs to address this question. I dunno, maybe my observations are inaccurate. But the timetable is pretty telling; by 1967, "hippie" was dead for all intents and purposes, and the oldest of the boomers would only have been 22 by then. If you think it's right to characterize them in the intro as boomers, I won't argue -- that article is so god-awful that a minor quibble over 1945 vs. 1940 birthdays isn't too important. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 00:39, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Sequential edits to "Hippie" article

Hi Viriditas. During the past month I and several other editors (Pedant and Mombas, in particular) have carefully worked out several compromises regarding the lead to the "Hippie" article. Many of these changes were made in response to objections you registered a month or so ago. When you last entered into this discussion, you wanted citations for other items, stated differently, not the lead as it appeared (until today) in its present form.

I would appreciate it if you could make your approach a bit less precipitous. Some of what was written was sourced, and some was not--more a function of limited time than an unwillingness to do the sourcing work. To simply eliminate whole sections seems rash. And moving the Eisenhower quote and discussion of the seminal impact of the dawning of the Vietnam War to the 1963-66 section weakens the lead, making it choppy and causing a failure in transition.

Finally, fifteen or sixteen sequential edits (rather than a single edit worked out in preview) makes the changes nearly impossible to track and compare. I've reverted to a previous edit for now because I believe the article has been damaged by these edits.

Can we discuss this please and move a bit more slowly, answering your specific objections and incorporating some of the changes you have made in a more incremental manner?

Thanks. Founders4 08:16, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Hippies

I have added a few small things to the Hippies article over the past couple of months, as well as to the article on Timothy Leary. I was one of the original hippies in San Francisco in 1967, and Timothy Leary was an acquaintance of mine, so these are subjects I know about! Keraunos 13:40, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Time Stamp

Could you please tell me if there is a way to change the time stamp that inserts the time when you wrote a contribution to Wikipedia to reflect the time in your own time zone, and if so, could you instruct me how to do this? Also, can the time stamp be adjusted to account for Daylight Saving Time? Thank you. Keraunos 13:40, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Ken Kesey and MKULTRA

Ken Kesey's introduction to LSD during MKULTRA experiments while he was a student at Stanford had a major impact on hippie history. In fact it is hard to imagine hippies becoming what they became without LSD, and Kesey was intrumental in popularizing its use. I see no justification for removing this reference--once again Viriditas, it is an arbitrary deletion. Please reinstate it. If you do not reinstate it, I will. There is no excuse for not including relevant information in the article, your own prejudices aside.Founders4 04:38, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello

Hello, I on;y reverted because you are in a dispute with another editor that involves that policy, editing a policy while in a dispute with an editor that involves that policy can (And at the time to me) look like a bad faith messure. I am neutral in this and would like to remain that way (Other than advising Pendant on how to handle his dispute). I made a suggestion for mediation on the WP:OWN talk page. It may help to calm the issue down (Of course I would not mediate it since I'm now some what involved). I would recomend for the time being that you not edit the own policy until the dispute is settled (Editing it may cause the issue to flair up something by the looks you it niether side wants). I'm not pendant advocate yet (He would more than likey as me since I'm the deputy coordinator of the AMA and he is a advocate himself. I will also bring this up to the coordinator to see what we can do to help solve this issue before it blows up). Happy Editing Æon Insanity Now!EA! 16:21, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Featured list candidate

I thought you'd like to know that List of United States federal legislation has been nominated to be a Featured List. It needs 4 votes by October 2 2006.

As I have labored hard on the article, I would appreciate your looking it over. You can find a discussion here: Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of United States federal legislation.

Thank you!

Thank you

Thanks, Viriditas, for your latest edits. Many of them do improve the article, as have others. My objections to elimination of the political aspect of hippie identity from the lead remain--hope we can work that out.

You are correct, of course, that The Hippie Museum is not the most impressive place from which to source. I suppose I am more concerned with the actual quality of what they have collected (generally quite high), but I do understand your concern. I am glad you will be converting the cite for Stewart Brand's 1995 essay on the libertarian aspect of hippie identity and its cultural importance--especially with respect to cyberspace. Good thing Time published it. The next time I see Stewart--probably at next month's Long Now gathering--I will consult with him for the purpose of adding to the "Philosophy/Ethos" citing. I'm sure he has written more on the topic than appeared in the Whole Earth Catalogue, and it would be great to include such references.

I initiated a request for a similar consultation with Stephen Gaskin (as you probably noted), since "conscious creation" was a frequent topic of discussion during his Monday Night Classes. Haven't yet laid my hands on his book by the same title--reference may or may not appear in this redacted version of class content.

By the way, this "we are as gods" and "conscious creation" stuff put hippies in direct conflict with traditional Christianity, especially Catholic theologeans who considered it blasphemy. (I'm sure Muslims would be even more offended.) We need a section that discusses hippies/spirituality/religion in more detail. Maybe I'll work on that next.

I found it necessary to revert GeorgeLouis' radical edit of the lead to your last edit. Hope you concur. His concerns re: sourcing echo your own. I'll try to get the page numbers you requested to you shortly. I own two copies of 'The Ultimate Frontier,' the early edition I cited and a reorganized (though unchanged) later edition. Only the later edition has an index, and about fifty pages make reference to the topic in question--unfortunately the page numbers do not correlate, so a re-read will be necessary. I briefly borrowed The Hippie Trip, so don't have it in my possession at present. Didn't note the page numbers, as I usually would in traditional footnoting, because I noticed that no one else in Wikipedia seems to do that.

It is my hope, Viriditas, that we will eventually be able to resolve our differences and mutually profit from collaborative editing efforts. Founders4 19:14, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

For the record, I wrote the above when I was still hopeful that collaborative editing efforts were possible. Your final acts of bad faith--accusing me of fraud after I spent an entire day adding citations you requested, in conjunction with your final disruptive edit--forced me to conclude that your actions constitute a form of trolling. You have editing skill, which I acknowledge. It is not, however, coupled with a willingness to work harmoniously with others. Founders4 17:48, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
By "disruption" you mean my penchant for fact and reference checking - a thankless task which uncovered misuse of citations and an onfoing culture of original research by yourself and others on the Hippie article. If demanding accuracy, neutrality, and verification are "trolling", then I suggest you have a lot to learn. Until that time comes, I will ask you to confine your comments to the article talk page, as you seem incapable of discussing the topic. —Viriditas | Talk 21:47, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

assessment system done; still need help

Viriditas,

The assessment system for Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii is all done and 100% functional. It still needs help from 1 editor and 1 admin. Some details are on Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Hawaii. I'll fill you in on more details when you see this...--Ling.Nut 16:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

HI again,
I've already ranked [[[Hawaii]], Native Hawaiians and spam musubi, just to get the ball rolling. But what needs to be done now is:
  • To do (editing):
  1. Copy Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups/Assessment. Modify it to meet the needs of this project (esp. remove text about "needs-infobox", since this project doesn't have one; plus also alter the text about what makes something top-high-mid-low importance). Put the modified text here:
    Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Assessment
  2. Do the same for Template talk:Ethnic groups; place modified version on the talk page of the WikiProject Hawaii banner.--Ling.Nut 00:29, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

...Then just let me know if there's any way I can help with the updating. I've made sidebars before (see my pet project, Taiwanese aborigines), etc. I already did a little minor cleanup and added a border to the WikiProject Hawaii page...
Cheers!--Ling.Nut 01:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Article about Wikipedia Users

Hello,

I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” If you are interested in participating, please email me at brianwrites@gmail.com

If anybody else, other than this user is interested in participating, feel free to email me as well. This article is intended to be a light informational piece, nothing too heavy or controversial, just merely introducing readers to a subculture that they likely had no idea existed. So please don’t email me with your conspiracy theories, or your grudge against the Wikipedia hierarchy… unless it directly applies to your overall experience with the site. This article is about the USERS, not about the pros and cons of the site itself.

Thanks,

Jews for Jesus

Hi and welcome to a good contender for most disputed page in Wikipedia. I'd really ask that you joing the discussion on the talk page rather than just reverting the article. The issue is being strongly debated; extra reverts don't help much.

With regards to your edit summary "..misrepresent the Jewish POV", I would hope I don't have to point out that Wikipedia is not supposed to be supporting the Jewish POV. We are supposed to be presenting the Neutral POV. Do have a look at the section where this is discussed. DJ Clayworth 15:16, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Writing for the enemey involves representing a POV. The edit you are defending deceptively presented a non-neutral POV as neutral by inferring that some Jews could be Jews for Jesus. Please don't bother replying here if you are going to keep playing these silly semantic games. —Viriditas | Talk 19:14, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Mission District references

You said the references I removed were "perfectly acceptable in this context, and serve to support the content". They're not. Did you actually look at them? I waded through pages and pages of bureaucratese and found nothing even remotely related to the statements they were supposedly referencing. It's not enough for references to be technically supportive: readers who open links like these should have some reasonable expectation of actually finding the reference in a short amount of time. That's why I removed them. +ILike2BeAnonymous 20:02, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

You've made an error. Please review the citations again. They support the content they were referencing entirely, and they are perfectly acceptable in this context. —Viriditas | Talk 20:33, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Dude! I don't think you get it. The paragraph has a run-on sentence, and the last sentence is unclear about who actually climbs the steps -- the conquistador or the priest. Fine, I'll renege on the temple/pyramid deal, but the other stuff, you can't just revert in whole. Change what needs to be changed, because if you're gonna keep a run-on over a valid sentence, you have a problem. --Erik (talk/contrib) @ 04:43, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

"His men are killed in battle and Tomás is captured by a crowd of Mayan warriors who spare his life, but force him to climb the pyramid." That is a run-on, son. If you're going to revert my edits, I'm going to point out each valid edit you revert on your talk page. Here's another: "Upon reaching the temple at the top, a Mayan priest stabs Tomás in the stomach." Is the Mayan priest or Tomas reaching the top? That needs to be clarified. --Erik (talk/contrib) @ 04:45, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Can I suggest adding a more accurate tag to the Themes and influences section, or at least write something on the talk page about why you think it needs improvement? The clean-up template you added to the section requests either course of action to communicate with other editors what could be improved. --Erik (talk/contrib) @ 16:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I'd still like you to add a more accurate tag or write something on the talk page for the Themes section. Otherwise, I'm just going to remove it, since you've obviously gotten this message and are preferring to edit on your own. In addition, I had the Themes and influences in one section because of sentences like this one: "Although ancient Mayan mysticism is a primary cultural influence in the film,[18] Jackman describes the story as a modern myth that helps humans understand the meaning of life. According to Jackson, these myths help explain the unexplainable, to reach a state of understanding: "These fables may not make scientific sense, but somehow they explain the world to us," which has influence and theme; and this sentence: "Director Darren Aronofsky also explores the modern theme of the Fountain of Youth; Aronofsky was inspired by an article in the New York Times that characterized aging as a disease that could be cured. In the film, Aronofsky considers the repercussions of actualizing life extension," which has theme and inspiration/influence. Where should they be located, then? I understand the reason why you broke them down, but I wanted to make clear that the actually defined themes from people who worked on the film were distinct from the reviewers' own interpreted themes. --Erik (talk/contrib) @ 15:42, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Prestige's importance

comments pages for Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii rankings

Hi Viriditas,

I have no objections to anything at all that you choose to do. The ranking system belongs to Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii, not to me. :-)

The cool thing about those rankings is that the 'bot picks them up nightly and puts them in the table with the rankings; see Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Ethnic groups articles by quality/1 for examples (scroll down a bit; no comments on the highest-ranked articles).

Do you have a link to your summary tables on the WikiProject page? I forget...

But do whatever you want! They belong to the WikiProject..

Advice about an obsessive updater

Viriditas, I've been impressed with your work on The Prestige and since you're a member of the Wiki Film Project I would like your advice. There were a couple spurious changes to the article's Cast list (addition of non-existent characters) which I reverted. Curious, I checked out the contributor (69.119.119.178) (I really have to check how to wikilink that!) and found a history of, shall we say, dubious edits, most regarding the Hollywood entertainment business.

A quick look at his/her edits shows that most are in the trivia category (list of films, roles, age, siblings, birthplace, etc.), but most cannot be verified (and many are erroneous). Also, contributions are voluminous, almost obsessive. I think most of her/his sources must be fan message boards or other publications; he/she also seems stalkerish about some celebrities. The user's talk page has a number of warnings about adding unverifiable entries, with accusations of vandalism. The user has been blocked a couple times, but seems to go on an editing spree as soon as the block expires.

I'm tempted to review a number of the user's edits for validity since many are in film articles, an area of interest for me, but I think if I start making corrections wholesale I'll ignite a flaming war (this user has been accused of online abuse of other Wiki contributors). Do you have any suggestions as to a productive path to pursue? I'm thinking a permanent block would be the answer, but since the user isn't intentionally vandalizing pages, I don't know if that's the appropriate route. However, does a consistent pattern of numerous, invalid edits constitute an actionable offense? Thank you. Jim Dunning 04:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Hawaii geo stubs

How did you guess about the surfing? My user page. No I created the stubs ages ago using a map because it didn't seem covered. For the points and beaches and villages I suggest as you did that a list is created of Places of Hawaii by island e.g List of places on Maui which will include beaches, headlands, villages etc. I love Hawaaii visited in the year 2000 Ernst Stavro Blofeld 10:25, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Unless you can find info to expand each of them then for the smaller places I dod suggest a redirect to the list.

I suggest : List of locations on Maui List of locations on Kauai etc. THis will include the headlands, beaches, smaller villages etc Ernst Stavro Blofeld 10:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

George Ewart

Hey Viri, thanks for the info. :) I haven't heard of George before, but it is possible he was very distantly related. Dad doesn't have any siblings, so I don't have many closely related Ewart rels, but there are quite a few in the very extended family. Anyway thanks for pointing that out to me, I found interesting. It's nice to see you back, but I hope you had a good break. :) Cheers, Sarah Ewart 14:24, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Talk page discussion

Thanks for the tip. I looked at the two pages you linked to and posted on the second one. S.E.'s talk page is really the main place where this discussion has gone on, so I don't know what else to use for it.

Proposing deletion isn't an issue now. The article about Z.T.E. had an AfD discussion some time ago, and the decision was "Delete." Cognita 22:51, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

This page links to the AfD discussion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Zach_Tyler_Eisen
I understand that, in general, straying conversations on someone's talk page would be inappropriate. Since S.E. is the admin who last dealt with Z, however, she may be the best person to follow the discussion about what he's been doing. His article makes it easy to find out his little sister's address and phone number, assuming the girl is real – I say this because he makes up other kinds of things. His own and his parents' privacy is also a concern. How can we get the article deleted, as it was supposed to be? Cognita 00:56, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
P.S.: If you meant that in this case it's best to post such comments on the talk page of Z's article, I'm afraid no admin would see them there. And, among the many things I don't know about Wikipedia, I don't know whether a blocked user is blocked from reading or only from editing. He's less likely to find me on someone else's talk page than on the talk page for his article. I'm trying to keep a low profile. With his history of vandalism, if I stuck my head out of the burrow, I could expect reprisals when his block expired (by the way, I think two months is too short and two years would be better). Cognita 01:09, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

I was being fiercely protective, too, only with a different target. S.E. has taken care of the problem for now. I guess we're clear for another six months. Cognita 06:23, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

<copied from Cognita's page by Sarah>You did everything right, it's just that I've seen Sarah's talk page get so busy in the past, I felt bad for her, and I thought we could help cut down on her clutter by keeping the discussion somewhere else. WatchlistBot

I don't know what happened at the bot requests page. Some sort of odd caching thing I guess. Anyway, I'm caught up with other stuff, and could help with Hawaii if you want. My bot's pretty primitive really. I don't get any info about how active articles are, or even if they're new. I know there are ways to get some of that info through the toolserver, but I'm not familiar with that. You might talk to User:interiot who had some similar ideas for WatchlistBot and also has experience working with the toolserver. I'm not spending much time on wikipedia these days, but I find small WatchlistBot jobs to be entertaining. I did tag all Hawaii-related categories awhile back when I was testing that as a new feature. At the time I noticed that there were a lot of untagged articles. I posted to the project page to ask if anyone wanted me to tag them, but got no response. This is something the bot is already set up to do, and I could do it easily if you're interested. I could do this for just stubs and stub categories, like you mentioned, or for the whole project. Ingrid 21:59, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm tagging completely untagged stubs right now. When it's done, I'll add the class parameter to unclassed stubs. After that, I can look into the other things you suggested. Can you tell me specifically how to determine those things (cleanup, merge, etc). I can easily find articles which contain a specific template, or which are in a specific category. Finding overlap is also easy. That is, articles which are in a Hawaii category and tagged with a cleanup template. Or in a Hawaii category and also in a cleanup category. Ingrid 04:01, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I just started working on cleanup tags for Hawaii articles. It's not as easy as I'd hoped. There are a _lot_ of clean up categories, making it take a long time. Not necessarily a problem for a bot, but it makes it slower to test, and sometimes the bot crashes in the middle of a run. Probably not anything I can't work through, but I'm not sure when I'll get it finished. If you had a shorter list of categories, that would probably help. Ingrid 22:39, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

PocKleanBot

Well, I think we knew that would happen. Nobody likes a nag! :) Listen, I think there is still a need for this bot if you go with my original idea concerning WikiProjects. Instead of leaving messages on user talk pages, you could update WikiProject categories, tables, and discussion pages. Certain users could sign up with you to get detailed reports, and if necessary use the information to contact editors on a human to human basis. We need this bot, but we just need to put people on the frontline, not automated messages. I have to run right now, but when I return I will try and go into more detail. —Viriditas | Talk 22:35, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, but no thanks, I've withdrawn the bot and I'm going to move on, too many people had too many colourful ocncerns about this bot. It's too much hard work this way trying to get a bot through approval etc. It really did surprise me how irate some people got about a small message left with good intentions on their talk page. I'm going to just volunteer my services at "bot requests" from now on and develop any bots people want making on the proviso that they get the bot approval and I'll do the coding for them. I hate getting dragged into debates. I like writing wikipedia articles and I life writing bots, but I hate getting dragged into justifications for both so I'll stay clear as far as possible :-) - PocklingtonDan 22:53, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
...for all your hard work, and for dealing gracefully with all the flak you have received over PocKleanBot. I still think we can accomplish your noble goals by diffusing articles marked for cleanup into the relevant WikiProject categories, which should be contained under Category:Wikipedia cleanup categories (but most are not yet listed). WikiProject Hawaii, for example, would like to have a cleanup table updated based on article categories, and reports generated on a weekly basis for newsletter distribution. A WikiProject cleanup taskforce could opt-in to receive these updates or just view them on a project page. The cleanup process could benefit from this bot. I think this bot can also be used as an opt-in feature, similar to SuggestBot. For example, a cleanup task force could opt-in, and your bot could scan their edit contribs for similar articles needing cleanup. Or, Wikipedians listed by interest could put their money where their mouth is, and opt-in to cleanup articles based on that criteria. Any way you choose to do it, as long as you give the user the option, it will be successful. Unfortunately, automatic unsolicited talk page messages go against the prevailing culture of Wikipedia, and due to human psychology, nagging has a negative perception. I share your desire to speed up the cleanup process, and I hope we can work together to achieve those goals. Please don't take any of this personally; consider this failed bot run as an opportunity to improve your bot. We need you, and as your bot approval page demonstrates, you have support. Again, your efforts are greatly appreciated. —Viriditas | Talk 03:55, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments but I've taken too much heat over this one and I'm just not interested in continuing with it - PocklingtonDan 08:34, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Canvassing

In MY opinion, I think you're okay with contacting the members of a Project because they've signed up for the project, so it's like an opt-in, which is different from PocklingtonDan's bot, which was contacting people whether they had indicated they were interested in being contacted or not. small option of template

Viriditas,

The option to change the template size is becoming quite popular. I could arrange it so that the current version is completely unchanged, but an option for a smaller version is possible. I'm working on a small option at Talk:Popora people. Compare that to what you see on Talk:Hoanya people. The difference is that one has the small=yes option set (but that version is not done yet...)

I've already added a couple tags to the Hawaii template (before I saw your comments). It's very far from finished though.

please do not remove merge tag from cannabis (drug)

Hi, I noticed you removed the merge tag. Please do not remove it to allow discussion of the proposed merge on the Talk page. Cannabis is not a drug, it is a species of plant. The drug THC is contained in the cannabis plant. --Bill Huston (talk) 11:45, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Political Cooperative

I am not sure if this is the correct place to leave you a message, but I was wondering if you can femove the tone tag from Political Cooperative?

Zionism and Racism

I have reviewed all policies. Please discuss your issues with each citation I inserted individually if you have any real debate over my content in this article. Otherwise, you are making baseless accusations. The article is about zionism and racism... get it?

SarahEwart protected my userpages

Please unprotect them as I'd like to remove the suspected sockpuppet template accusation which is unfounded and included no evidence. Canuckster 14:06, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Have you tried to work something out with Sarah directly? Although the two of you might disagree on issues, she is very reasonable and fair. —Viriditas | Talk 14:27, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
That's your opinion but I find any contact with her by me results in a insulting comeback (usually calling me Ottawaman)from her. You said on my talk page; " If you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me" so that is what I am doing. You seemed to support her control of her user space so I was hoping you would have the same view of my user space (that I could have some control over it) and since you got involved before on her behalf I hoped you would do so again on my behalf. However, I will assume your interest and involvement is one-sided (imo) and you will choose to leave my user space page protections in place. I will look elsewhere for help in this regard.Canuckster 15:46, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
