Pittsburgh?[edit]

This county isn't even part of the {{WikiProject Pittsburgh}}. I don't think we should use Ad companies definitions of geo-political boundaries. Is there any other county description that does this? Sorry, it was obvious to me, it's the lead sentence "Venango County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is part of the Pittsburgh DMA." what does this have to do with Venango Counnty? Even if there is some connection (I do not consider an Ad company to be a reliable source) should it be the lead sentence?Tstrobaugh 22:57, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, it should go, and I have removed it. Not sure when or why it was added. Titusville isn't In Venango County[edit]

The short, one sentence history of the first successful oil well is that it was drilled in Titusville. Drake's well was actually drilled a few miles outside of town, just across the Venango County border. I added that Titusville is in Crawford County, and threw in the names of Venango County towns that became oil boom towns. I live in Crawford County, just attended Oil 150 marking the 150th anniversary of the start of the oil industry, and went to both Titusville and Drake Well Park. When I was leaving the Park I noticed there was an "entering Crawford County" sign just beyond the Park boundaries. A few months ago I mistakenly changed the Venango County article to state that the first oil well wasn't in Venango County. Now I come back to correct my earlier incorrect edit. --Karenthewriter (talk) 17:09, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the fix and explanation - this is one reason why Wikipedia articles should ideally be referenced to reliable sources. I note that the the PennDOT Map for Venango County clearly shows the Drake Well is (just) in the county and is a reliable source. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 14:25, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Add Drake's Well back to the Attractions, the park is in Venango- the county line is literally withing a couple hundred feet of the entrance, but it is indeed IN Venango County. (Drake's Home, on the other hand, is in Crawford.) I see that we've included John Wilks Booth on the list, though he was a temproary resident, but someone has removed Nate Byham from the article. If I recall, he was listed when he was in High School as he was a top ranked HS football player. Out of order? Something accidentally deleted?[edit]

The History section begins with this: "Shortly afterward, Rogers met oil pioneer Charles Pratt, who purchased the entire output of the tiny Wamsutta Oil Refinery. In 1867, Rogers joined Pratt in forming Charles Pratt and Company, which was purchased by Standard Oil in 1874."

"Shortly afterward"? After what? The intro paragraph at the top mentions the county's founding 60 years prior, but there's an unrelated paragraph that comes between those two dates, and 60 years hardly sounds like "shortly afterward." Awhile back, the sentence "Venango County was created on March 12, 1800" was moved from the top of the History section. There is some sorting out to correct the problem. Thanks for your observation. 〜 Adflatuss • talk 18:18, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
